私とパートナーのジョセフは付き合い始めてもうすぐ１年になります。去年の７月末から交際がスタートしました。

先日２人で写真を見ながら１年を振り返っていましたが、まるで数年間に思えるほど沢山のことがありました。楽しいことから辛かったことまで時が経つと全てが意味のある大切な出来事です。

2人での初の遠出は彼の実家

そんな私たちが初めて2人で遠出したのは彼の故郷のプリンスジョージでした。１週間彼のお母さんアンバーとステップファザーのウェードのご自宅に泊まらせていただきました。

しかも訪れたのは付き合って１ヶ月しか経っていない去年の８月末です。

彼のお母さんが再婚するにあたって、彼らの御自宅で親族と友人のみが集まる小さな結婚式を行うことを決めたので、ジョセフと私を招待してくれました。

カナダは日本に比べると結婚式への参加や恋人の家族に会うことへのハードルは低いのは事実です。しかし付き合い始めてすぐにジョセフに招待され、その日程は１ヶ月後。私にとっては、あまりにも展開が早すぎるので友人は、私が誘拐されて帰って来れなくなるのではと少し心配していました。笑

しかし私からしたら、新しい場所にいくだけでもワクワクするのに、それがただの旅行ではなくリアルなカナダのご家庭の文化を体験できる上に、結婚式に参加できるなんて貴重な機会なのだろうという気持ちの方が強かったです。

バンクーバーからプリンスジョージへのドライブ

プリンスジョージはバンクーバーから約７８０km北上した場所に位置し、同じブリティッシュコロンビア 州です。車で約９時間かかる距離。夏の最高の気候だったこともあり私たちはロードトリップも兼ねて車でいくことに決めました。ちなみに冬はマイナス４０度を超える極寒のため雪が降り続けます。そのため冬の場合は飛行機がマストです。

ドライブの時間は、ブリティッシュコロンビアならではの日本にはない規模感の絶景がひたすら続くため、窓からの眺めに目を離せずにはいられませんでした。是非こちらの動画をご覧ください！大絶景が体感できると思います。

私は国際免許を持っていないので彼がずっと運転をしてくれました。本当にありがとう。

アンバーとウェードの自宅に驚愕

プリンスジョージの空港で彼のお母さんアンバーとステップファザーのウェードと緊張の初対面を果たしました。2人はとても温かい笑顔で迎えてくれて少し緊張の糸が切れて安堵したのを覚えています。

そして彼らのご自宅に到着すると同時に私は驚愕しました。その理由は３つあります。

①全ての規模感

私が人生で見た家の中で最も大きな家です。さらにその家は大きな庭や森で囲まれていて、それらも彼らの住まいの一部でした。小さな日本では到底考えられない規模感だったので、ただ開いた口が塞がりませんでした。

こちらの動画を見ていただければ体感できると思いますが、とにかく全てがデカイ！！！です。

②彼らと暮らす動物たち

馬が２匹(実は現在もう１頭増えています)、大型犬が２匹、猫が２匹、魚１匹とさらにその日はジョセフの妹さんの犬２匹がアンバーのご自宅にいたので合計９匹の人間以外の動物がいました。

日本の家の規模感では考えられない環境です。これだけの数の動物がいるにも関わらず、動物アレルギー持ちの私の反応が出ずに過ごせるくらい大きなお家でした。日本の家の広さだったら１日目に即アレルギー反応が出て呼吸困難になるでしょう。

犬たちも広い空間を自由に走り回っていてとても幸せそうに見えました。

さらに敷地内で乗馬ができる環境でした。馬との暮らしが私の夢のひとつなので、この状況を目の当たりにして私は大興奮していました。

③アンバーとウェードが設計から建築まで全て行った素敵なお家

地下と１階と２階の三層になっていて、各階にバスルームがあり地下にはジム設備、ゲストルームがひとつ、２階には３部屋のゲストルームがありました。

１階は彼らの寝室とリビングルームと大きなキッチンがあります。わたしはキッチンからのこの眺めがとても好きでした。こんなキッチンだったら料理が嫌いな私でも好きになれるかもしれません。たぶん。笑

窓が大きく日差しが沢山入り、美しい風景がどの角度からも見えるので本当に居心地の良い空気感でした。

私が人生で見た家の中で１番素晴らしいと言っても過言ではありません。そして彼らが設計から建築まで全て行ったことにも感銘を受けました。外観と内装が美しいだけではなく、細部から温かみやこだわりが感じられたのは彼らがゼロから作ったからなのだと思います。

アンバーの結婚式前日の準備に同行

とにかく全てが新鮮で日本との違いがあまりにも多いので私はあらゆることに興味津々。結婚式の前日のアンバーの式の準備にも同行させていただきました。

またネイティブに囲まれると英語のスピードが早すぎて、会話についていけなくなってしまうことが多いので彼女との２人きりの会話に挑戦したかったのも、実は同行した大きな理由の一つです。彼女の車の中で緊張しながらジョセフのことや今回結婚式を行うと決めたきっかけなど気になることを可能な限り質問した覚えがあります。ついて行ったのは２件の用事です。

①式の装飾のお花のピックアップ

彼女がオーダーした結婚式用のアレンジメントをピックアップしに行きました。フローリストとして働いているのでプリンスジョージのフローリストを見に来たくてついて行きました。

②結婚式に向けてのネイルサロン

アンバーはウェデイングドレスに合うホワイトのジェルネイルを施しに行きました。そのネイルサロンに行く際に誘っていただき、同行させてもらいました。なんと私までネイルさせてもらうことに。右下の写真わたしのネイルです。カナダで初めてネイルをした日になりました。

ついに結婚式当日

彼らの結婚式は家の敷地内にある大きなガーデンで行われ、約６０名の親戚や友人たちが集まりました。厩舎の前で行われたこちらの誓いの言葉のシーンでは犬や馬たちも参加しとても和やかで幸せなムードで包まれていました。ウェディングドレス姿のアンバーは美しすぎて、神々しく輝いていました。

左下の写真はジョセフと彼の妹ヘイリー、右下の写真は彼の弟のリアムの登場シーンです。

左下の写真はアンバーが彼のお父さん(皆んなからパパベアーと呼ばれています)と登場した瞬間のシーンです。私はどの結婚式に参列してもいつも花嫁と父親の登場シーンで涙腺が緩みます。きっと無意識に自分と父親を重ね合わせてしまうんでしょうね。

右下の写真は誓いのお言葉が終わり、退場するアンバーとウェードです。２人とも本当に幸せそうで心が温まりました。

ちなみに式にはこんな可愛いゲストも。妖精たちかと思いました。

下の写真はとにかく激しく遊ぶ子供たち。どこの国でも子供は本当にパワフルですよね。見ているとパワーがもらえます。

ガーデンには子供用の遊具や大きなこちらのテントや客席、トイレ、フードトラック、沢山のお酒が準備されていました。

そしてこの日はジョセフのいとこのアイビーの３歳のお誕生日のお祝いも行われました。

日が暮れてきた頃、夕日がとても綺麗だったのでガーデンでジョセフと記念撮影しました。

さらにこんな相撲レスラーの着ぐるみも準備されており、大人たちも子供たちと同じくらい激しく楽しんでいました。笑

これらの手配は全てアンバーとウェードが行いました。彼らが主役であるにも関わらず、子供から大人まで全てのゲストに素敵な時間を過ごしてもらいたいという彼らのおもてなしの温かい気持ちが各所に散りばめていました。

アンバーとウェードの人柄

彼らはたまにバンクーバーへジョセフに会いにやってきます。ありがたいことにその度に私も招待してくださいます。初めてお会いした去年の８月から何度も会うたびに感じるのは2人の温かい人柄と素敵な笑顔です。

2人とも紆余曲折を経て、今の素敵なお家での結婚生活に至っています。幾度となく壁を乗り越えてきた人は人の感情を理解できる幅が広く、とても強くそして温かいです。彼らの目の奥からはその深みが感じられます。

約６０名のネイティブスピーカー、そして英語との戦い

私は３人以上のネイティブに囲まれた状態だとスピードが早く会話についていけなくなり、どうしても大人しくなってしまいます。

結婚式当日、ジョセフは式のお手伝いや沢山の親戚や家族との久々の再会だったこともあり本当に忙しくて、あまり私の近くにはいませんでした。そのため私は全員が初対面の約６０名のネイティブスピーカーとたった１人の日本人という状況にいました。笑

英語上達にはもってこいの環境ではありながらもその状況に馴染もうとするのは、バンクーバーにきて当時８ヶ月の私からしたら「キラキラ星」しか弾けない子供に急に「ショパンの幻想即興曲」をひけと言われるくらいのレベル。笑

しかしその中でも特にこちらの写真のジョセフの叔母さんが日本の文化に深く興味を持って沢山話しかけてくださり、それがとても嬉しくてその会話に全力投球しました。

さらにアンバーやウェード、彼の兄弟と２人きりになったら話しかけてみたり、たまたま隣にいる人に声をかけてみたり、常に緊張と戦いながら、小さな挑戦をとにかく重ねていこうと意識して過ごしました。こういう時に常に頭の中にあるのは父からの教訓です。

Joseph and I have been dating for almost a year now. We started our relationship at the end of July last year. Recently, we were looking at photos together and reflecting on the past year. It feels like we’ve experienced so much in such a short time. From happy moments to challenging ones, everything becomes meaningful and important as time goes by.

First Trip Together

Visiting His Hometown Our first trip together was to Joseph’s hometown, Prince George. We stayed at his mother Ambre and stepfather Wade’s house for a week. This happened just a month after we started dating, in late August last year. His mother had decided to have a small wedding at their home, with only close relatives and friends attending, and she invited Joseph and me. In Canada, compared to Japan, it is relatively easy to attend weddings and meet your partner’s family. However, being invited so soon after starting our relationship, with the event scheduled just one month later, made some of my friends worry that I might be kidnapped and not able to return. haha

But for me, the excitement of going to a new place was already thrilling, and the fact that it was not just a regular trip but an opportunity to experience real Canadian family culture and participate in a wedding made it even more precious.

Drive from Vancouver to Prince George

Prince George is located approximately 780 kilometers north of Vancouver, in the same province of British Columbia. It takes about 9 hours by car, and we decided to drive there, making it a road trip. The weather was perfect during the summer, so it was a great opportunity for us to enjoy the drive. However, during winter, the temperature drops to below -40 degrees Celsius, and it snows continuously. In that case, taking a flight is a must.

During the drive, the breathtaking landscapes of British Columbia, with a scale that I had never seen before, kept me captivated. You can get a sense of the amazing scenery in this video.

Since I don’t have an international driver’s license, Joseph drove the whole way. I was really grateful to him for that.

Astonishing Visit to Ambre and Wade’s Home

At Prince George Airport, I had my first nervous meeting with Joseph’s mother, Ambre, and stepfather, Wade. They welcomed us with warm smiles, and I remember feeling relieved as a bit of tension dissolved.

As soon as we arrived at their home, I was amazed for three reasons:

1. Enormous Scale

It was the largest house I had ever seen in my life. The house was surrounded by a large garden and forest, which were also part of their property. The scale was unimaginable in Japan, and I couldn’t close my mouth from sheer surprise.

If you could watch this video, I think you’ll be able to experience it firsthand, but everything is just HUGE!!!

2. Living with Animals

They had two horses (currently, there is an additional one), two large dogs, two cats, one fish, and on that day, two dogs belonging to Joseph’s sister were also at Amber’s house. So, in total, there were nine non-human animals.

This was an environment that I could never imagine in Japan in terms of the scale of a house. Considering the number of animals, it’s surprising that I, someone with allergies to animals, didn’t have any allergic reactions and could stay comfortably in such a large house. If it were the size of a typical Japanese house, I would probably have had an allergic reaction on the first day and struggled to breathe.

The dogs seemed very happy as they ran freely in the spacious area. Moreover, it was a place where you could go horseback riding on the premises. As someone who dreams of living with horses, I was thrilled to witness this situation.

3. Wonderful Home Designed and Built by Ambre and Wade

Their house had three floors: a basement, the first floor, and the second floor. Each floor had bathrooms, with a gym and a guest room in the basement, and three guest rooms on the second floor.

On the first floor, there were their bedroom, a living room, and a large kitchen. I particularly liked the view from the kitchen. With such a kitchen, even someone like me who dislikes cooking might start to enjoy it. Maybe. haha

The large windows allowed plenty of sunlight to enter, and from any angle, you could see beautiful scenery. It had a truly cozy atmosphere.

This house is, without a doubt, the most wonderful one I have ever seen in my life. I was also impressed by the fact that Ambre and Wade designed and built it themselves. The exterior and interior were not only beautiful but also showed warmth and attention to detail, which I believe was possible because they created everything from scratch.

Accompanying Ambre for Wedding Preparations

Everything was new and there were so many differences from Japan that I was incredibly curious about everything. I also wanted to challenge myself to have conversations with Ambre, just the two of us, because I often struggle to keep up with the speed of native English speakers when I’m in a group of three or more. That was actually one of the main reasons I joined her for the wedding preparations on the day before.

We had two appointments together.

1. Picking Up Flower Arrangements for the Wedding Decorations

Ambre had ordered floral arrangements for the wedding, so we went to pick them up. Since I work as a florist, I wanted to see the florists in Prince George.

2. Nail Salon for Wedding Nail Art

Ambre wanted to have white gel nails that would match her wedding dress, so she went to a nail salon for that. I was invited to join her, and I even had my nails done too. The photo on the bottom right shows my nails. It was the first time I had my nails done in Canada.

Finally, the Wedding Day

Their wedding took place in a large garden within their property, and about 60 relatives and friends gathered. The scene of their vows, held in front of the stable, was joined by dogs and horses, creating a warm and joyful atmosphere. Ambre, in her wedding dress, looked incredibly beautiful and radiated a divine aura.

The photo on the bottom left shows Joseph with his sister Hailey, and the photo on the bottom right captures the moment when his brother Liam appeared.

The photo on the bottom left is the scene when Ambre appeared with Joseph’s father (who is called Papa Bear by everyone). Whenever I attend a wedding, I am always moved by the entrance of the bride with her father. I think it unconsciously reminds me of myself and my own father.

The photo on the bottom right shows Ambre and Wade as they concluded their vows and exited. They both looked incredibly happy, and it warmed my heart.

By the way, there were some adorable guests at the wedding. I thought they were fairies.

The photo below shows children playing vigorously. Children are truly powerful no matter where they are from. Watching them gives you energy.

In the garden, there were children’s play equipment, a large tent with seating, toilets, food trucks, and plenty of drinks prepared.

And on this day, we also celebrated Joseph’s cousin Ivy’s 3rd birthday.

As the sun began to set, the sunset was incredibly beautiful, so Joseph and I took a commemorative photo in the garden.

There was even a sumo wrestler costume like this, and the adults enjoyed themselves just as vigorously as the children. haha.

All of these arrangements were made by Ambre and Wade. Despite being the main characters, they had warm hospitality scattered throughout, wanting all the guests, from children to adults, to have a wonderful time.

Ambre and Wade’s personalities

They occasionally come to visit Joseph in Vancouver. Thankfully, every time they do, they invite me as well. What I feel every time I meet them, starting from our first meeting in August last year, is their warm personalities and beautiful smiles.

Both of them have gone through ups and downs and have come to their wonderful married life in their current lovely home. Those who have overcome many obstacles have a wide understanding of people’s emotions. They are very strong and warm-hearted. You can sense the depth in their eyes.

Around 60 native speakers and the battle with English

When I am surrounded by three or more native speakers, I can’t keep up with the speed and I inevitably become quiet. On the day of the wedding, Joseph was busy with his duties and had a lot of reunions with relatives and family members, so he wasn’t around me much.

As a result, I found myself in a situation where I was the only Japanese person among about 60 native English speakers. Haha. Although it was the perfect environment for improving my English, trying to blend in with that situation was like asking a child who can only play “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” to suddenly play “Fantasie-Impromptu” by Chopin. Haha.

However, especially the aunt in this photo showed a deep interest in Japanese culture and talked to me a lot about it. I was really happy and fully engaged in those conversations.

Furthermore, when I had the chance to be alone with Ambre, Wade, or Joseph’s siblings, I tried talking to them, and I even tried striking up conversations with people next to me by chance. I constantly faced nervousness and challenges and tried to accumulate small victories.
