Trip to Mexico with My Dear Friend Ari Part 4 – Memories with Ari’s Mom Paty

In this continuation of my travel experiences in Mexico, where I went to meet my friend Ari who I had met in Vancouver about a year and a half ago and returned to her home country, I want to share my memories with Ari’s mom, Paty.

Meeting Patty During my 10-day stay in Mexico, I was fortunate enough to stay at Ari’s house, where her family lived. Patty, Ari’s mother, took great care of me during that time. Since she only spoke Spanish, our conversations were either translated by Ari into English or done using Google Translate.

Paty manages a clothing alteration shop, so she was busy and we couldn’t spend a lot of time together. However, I quickly became captivated by her warm and kind personality.

Pozole – Traditional Mexican Dish Cooked by Paty

One of the most memorable experiences was when Paty, on her day off from work, made a traditional Mexican dish called “Pozole” for me.

Pozole is a Mexican-style stew made with pork and hominy. By the way, hominy is corn that has undergone a process called nixtamalization, which involves using an alkaline solution such as lime or lye to remove the hull and germ, resulting in a softer and larger grain. This process not only changes the texture and appearance but also increases its nutritional value.

Paty slowly simmered the pork, onions, and garlic, seasoned them with salt, pepper, and red chili peppers, and added hominy. It looked so delicious that I couldn’t resist peeking into the kitchen multiple times while she was cooking. Here’s a video I took at that time.

Before eating, we topped the Pozole with shredded cabbage, radishes, cilantro, lime, and other garnishes. The video I’m sharing here is Ari demonstrating the preparation steps before eating Pozole. Mexican cuisine involves quite a few steps right before eating, which I found amusing.

The dish was incredibly delicious, and I couldn’t stop spooning it into my mouth. It was truly one of the most impressive dishes I had during my trip to Mexico.

Overcoming the Language Barrier and Experiencing Paty’s Personality and Cooking

Despite the language barrier, I could sense Paty’s bright and charming personality from the moment I met her, conveyed through her wonderful smile and aura. At the same time, I could feel her depth and strength as a mother who raised three children, just by looking into her eyes. Whenever I heard Ari and her sister Daniela talk about Paty, it was clear how deeply they appreciated and loved their mother. Each time, I could imagine how Paty had poured her deep love into raising her children. That’s why both Ari and Daniela have grown into sensitive, kind, intelligent, and fascinating women. When I first arrived at Ari’s home, I was actually a little nervous. However, being served Pozole by Paty immediately eased my tension. I believe that cooking, like art, has the power to touch people’s hearts beyond language barriers. In truth, I don’t particularly enjoy cooking. But as I write this blog now, I am rediscovering the power of cooking, and I want to challenge myself to enjoy it more every day.

This experience of being able to eat traditional Mexican dish “Pozole” made by the mother of my Mexican friend’s family is a very precious one. And it’s all thanks to my decision to come to Vancouver and take action.
