日本から初の来客いけちゃんと過ごしたバンクーバー/From Japan, I had my first visitor and spent time with Ikey-chan in Vancouver

バンクーバーに来て約１年半が経ちますが、５月初旬に初めて日本から友人が遊びに来てくれました。あだ名はいけちゃん。まさか家族よりも誰よりも先に彼女に会えるだなんて想像していなかったです。本当に嬉しかったです。

彼女が乗る予定だった飛行機が急遽キャンセルになり、２泊３日だった予定が１泊２日になってしまいましたが、短期間ながらも有意義な時間を過ごすことができました。

いけちゃんとの日本での関係

彼女は日本で一緒に働いていた仲間です。私は約１０年間、日本のアパレル企業に勤務していました。そして約7年前に新ブランドのグランドオープンをきっかけに、私は名古屋から東京に引っ越しました。そのオープンニングメンバーとして彼女と初めて出会いました。このお店は日本で最も素晴らしいアパレルショップだと言っても過言ではありません。スタッフのサービスの質、店舗の美しさ、商品の質、常にワクワクさせる品揃え、全てにおいて星３つです。我ながらここで働いていたことがとても誇らしいです。

そしてオープンして数年経ったころに、彼女は会社の顔であるプレスという立場で本社に異動しました。そして今も大活躍中です。そんな彼女は日本での多忙の日々から抜け出して、束の間の休息にカナダに来てくれました。

いけちゃんとの思い出 in バンクーバー

①シーウォールでサイクリング　
パートナージョセフの提案により、これこそバンクーバー！という体験を彼女にしてもらおうと、３人でシーウォールでのサイクリングをしました。ちなみにシーウォールとは、バンクーバーで最も有名な公園であるスタンレーパークやダウンタウンの周囲で、海辺沿いに作られた散歩道とサイクリングロードです。
完璧な天気のなか、モダンなビル達とビーチ、大きな木々を同時に見ながらのサイクリングはまさにバンクーバーならではの景色を楽しめる完璧なアクティビティでした。

②八重桜の並木道

５月初旬はバンクーバーの街中に八重桜が綺麗に咲き誇る時期です。日本ではソメイヨシノがメインですがここでは圧倒的に八重桜が多いです。そんなバンクーバーの街並みを楽しむ彼女と過ごすことで、自分にとって日常になり始めていたバンクーバーの街並みがいかに素晴らしいものか再確認することが出来ました。

③ジョセフのアートのグースを日本に持ち帰ってくれたいけちゃん

パートナーのジョセフは約70羽のグースを自身のアートのひとつのシリーズとして製作しています。その中にこちらのドット柄のグースがあります。彼はどうしてもなんとかこれを草間弥生のスタジオに届けたいらしく、私がお手洗いに行っている間にいけちゃんに日本に連れて帰ってくれないかと尋ねていました。迷惑になるからやめてと伝えましたが、、、彼は草間弥生のアーティストとしての活動に強く感銘を受けているそうです。

なんと優しいいけちゃんは快く引き受けてくれ、彼の作ったグースと共に飛行機に乗って日本に飛び立って行きました。いけちゃん、ありがとう。

いけちゃんと過ごしたことで再認識出来たこと

①仕事の質と生産性の高さ

日本のアパレル企業のプレスとしてバリバリと働くいけちゃんに改めて尊敬の念を抱きました。そして日本の社会の第一線で働く彼女との会話から、彼女の仕事の質と生産性の高さを感じることが出来ました。

私はカナダに来て新しい経験を沢山し、ジュニアフローラルデザイナーとして仕事をしています。しかし日本で働いていた頃と同等の働き方はまだ出来ていません。日本でならすぐに理解して動けることにも、何倍も時間がかかることもあります。

でもどこの国にいようが、私が目指すべき仕事の質を彼女との会話で思い出させてくれました。言葉の壁を言い訳にして自分に甘くなるのは違うなと思います。

②バンクーバーで過ごす時間の希少価値

束の間の休息に旅行者としてきたいけちゃんと過ごすことで、日常的になり始めていたバンクーバー生活がいかに貴重な時間であるかを改めて感じることが出来ました。一分一秒も無駄にしないようにバンクーバーでしか出来ない経験、自分の成長に繋がる経験を常に選択して過ごすべきだと改めて自分の頭に叩き込みました。

さらにバンクーバーがいかに美しい街であるかを再確認しました。旅行でない限り、きっとどの国で生活しようが自分の暮らしに鮮度を持たせて過ごすか否かは常に自分次第なのだと思います。

たとえ日本に帰国したとしても日本で過ごす日々に新しい発見や成長を見つけて生きて行きたいと思います。

日本から来てくれた友人とバンクーバーで過ごすことは私にとって非常に良い経験になりました。鮮度のある角度で自分の生き方や母国、そしてバンクーバーを見ることが出来ました。この経験もバンクーバーに来る決断をしたからこそです。

“From Japan, I had my first visitor and spent time with Ikey-chan in Vancouver”

It has been about a year and a half since I came to Vancouver, but in early May, my friend from Japan came to visit me for the first time. Her nickname is Ike-chan. I never imagined that I would meet her before my own family or anyone else. I was really happy.

Unfortunately, her originally scheduled flight got canceled, so her visit was reduced from 3 days and 2 nights to just 2 days and 1 night. Despite the short duration, we were able to spend meaningful time together.

Relationship with Ike-chan in Japan

She was a colleague I worked with in Japan. I had been working for a Japanese apparel company for about 10 years. About 7 years ago, a new brand was set to open, and that’s when I moved from Nagoya to Tokyo and met her as part of the opening team. It’s no exaggeration to say that this store is one of the most amazing apparel shops in Japan. The quality of the staff’s service, the beauty of the store, the quality of the products, and the constantly exciting selection of items—it’s all top-notch. I’m really proud to have worked here.

After a few years since the opening, she was transferred to the headquarters in a press position, representing the company. And she is still doing great there. Despite her busy days in Japan, she took a short break and came to Canada.

Memories with Ike-chan in Vancouver

Cycling on the Seawall

Upon my partner Joseph’s suggestion, we decided to go cycling on the Seawall with Ike-chan to give her a true Vancouver experience. The Seawall is a famous park in Vancouver, surrounding Stanley Park and downtown, with a walkway and cycling path along the waterfront. The weather was perfect, and cycling while seeing modern buildings, beaches, and large trees at the same time was a truly unique Vancouver experience.

Cherry Blossom Avenue

Early May is the time when double-flowered cherry blossoms bloom beautifully in the streets of Vancouver. While spending time with Ike-chan, who was captivated by the cityscape of Vancouver, I was able to reconfirm how wonderful Vancouver’s streets are, which had become part of my daily life.

Ike-chan bringing Joseph’s art goose back to Japan

My partner Joseph creates art using around 70 geese as one of his series. Among them is a goose with a dot pattern. He desperately wanted to deliver it to Yayoi Kusama’s studio, so while I was in the restroom, he asked Ike-chan if she could take it back to Japan with her. I told him it would be a hassle, but… he is deeply impressed by Yayoi Kusama’s work as an artist. Kind-hearted Ike-chan happily agreed and flew back to Japan with his goose. Thank you, Ike-chan.

What I realized through spending time with Ike-chan

1. Quality of work and productivity

I deeply respected Ike-chan, who worked diligently as a press person in a Japanese apparel company at the forefront of Japanese society. Through conversations with her, I could feel the high quality of her work and productivity. I have been in Canada, gaining new experiences and working as a junior floral designer. However, I haven’t been able to work at the same level as when I was in Japan. There are times when it takes much longer to understand and take action on things that would be immediate in Japan. But regardless of the country, conversations with her reminded me of the quality of work I should strive for. It’s not right to use the language barrier as an excuse and be lenient with myself.

2. The Value of Time Spent in Vancouver

By taking the opportunity to spend time in Vancouver as a traveler, I have once again realized how precious the everyday life that was becoming routine in Vancouver truly is. I have reminded myself to not waste a single minute and to always choose experiences that can only be had in Vancouver and that contribute to my personal growth.

Furthermore, I have reaffirmed how beautiful a city Vancouver is. Unless it’s for travel, I believe it is always up to oneself to bring freshness to their daily life, regardless of which country they live in.

Even if I were to return to Japan, I would like to live each day with new discoveries and personal growth.

Spending time in Vancouver with friends who came from Japan has been a very positive experience for me. It has allowed me to view my way of life, my home country, and Vancouver from a fresh perspective. This experience is a direct result of the decision to come to Vancouver.
