親友Ariの母国メキシコへの旅③〜Ariの妹ダニエラとの思い出〜/Trip to Mexico with my Friend Ari Part 3: Memories with Ari’s a little Sister Daniela

約1年半前にバンクーバーで初めて出来た親友Ari。去年の7月に彼女に会うために行った10日間のメキシコへの旅とそこでの一期一会について引き続き書いていきたいと思います。今日はAriの妹のダニエラについてです。

Ariの妹ダニエラとの思い出

メキシコへの旅の10日間、有難いことにAriと彼女の家族が住むお家に泊まらせていただきました。

そこには当時15歳だったダニエラというAriの妹がいました。可愛くて英語が話せて人懐っこい彼女は私とたくさんのコミュニケーションを取ってくれました。私がメキシコに行った時期は普通の中学生はまだ学校に行っている期間だったのですが、彼女はとても勉強ができて優秀なので全ての授業を他の同級生より早く終えたようで、特別に一足早く夏休みに入っていました。そのため自由な時間が多く何度か一緒にお出かけすることが出来ました。

①ダニエラが書いてくれた似顔絵
絵を描くのが大好きな彼女は私の似顔絵をプレゼントしてくれました。生まれた頃からカラフルな建物に囲まれて育ったメキシコの女の子だからこその色使いだと思います。絵の中の私も日本人ではなくてメキシコ人のように見えます。Ari宅に飾るひまわりを近所の市場で買っている時の写真を使ってくれました。この似顔絵は私の宝物です。大切にファイリングしてカナダの家に保管しています。

②Ariの家の近所にある市場へのお使い

Ariの家の近所には市場があって、Ariのお母様に頼まれた食材をダニエラと一緒に買いに行きました。Ariの家はメキシコシティから車で約1時間の「クアウティトランイスカリ/Cuautitlan Izacalli」というところで、観光地ではないとてもローカルな場所だったので私にとっては大興奮の市場でした。そのため誰かが市場に行くという度について行って何度も行きました。でもAri達にとってはこの市場は日常なので私とのテンションの差も面白かったです。

③テオティワカン遺跡
メキシコシティから北東約50キロの位置にあり、紀元前2世紀から6世紀まで繁栄したテオティワカン文明の中心となった巨大な古代都市遺跡です。1987年に世界遺産にも登録されています。テオティワカンは約20平方キロメートルもの広大な敷地に「太陽のピラミッド」と「月のピラミッド」、5kmにおよぶ「死者の大通り」を基点にして建造物が建てられています。こちらの動画を見ていていただくと広大さが感じれると思います。

④テポツォトゥラン/Tepotzotlán観光

Ariの自宅からバスで30分くらい移動した先にある小さな町テポツォトラン。この日はAriのお母様とダニエラの彼氏も一緒にお出かけしました。この町の中央部に立っているのがサンフランシスコハビエル教会です。こじんまりとした街でもメキシコの歴史が深く刻み込まれていて大満足の一日でした。

こちらの写真は教会に行ったあとに入ったカフェでAriとお互いのサングラスを交換して遊んでいた時に撮られたものです。

ダニエラとの交流

ダニエラとの会話で一番印象に残っているのは、彼女が将来やってみたいことの話です。でも彼女が教えてくれた内容は「周りの人達にはあまり話してないから秘密ね」と言われたので書きません。ダニエラは読書が大好きで15歳とは思えないほど知識が豊富な女の子でした。学校では常にトップの成績だとか。さらに彼女の撮る写真や服からセンスの良さも感じました。外の世界にも興味深々のダニエラの将来がとても楽しみです。

読書好きのダニエラに10日間お世話になったお礼にメキシコシティのマーケットで見つけたこちらのカラフルなしおりをプレゼントしました。喜んでもらえて嬉しかったです！

日本の年齢への考え方と今年17歳になるダニエラへ

私は人は何歳になっても新しいことに挑戦できるし、歳を重ねることは素晴らしいことだと思います。私は10代、20代の時の自分よりはるかに今の自分の方が好きです。歳を重ねる度に精神的に強くなり、人の感情が理解できる幅が広くなって成長できているように感じるからです。さらに若い時に比べると悩むべきことと悩んでも無駄なことの区別をつけて、感情をコントロールできるようになり生きるのが精神的に楽になりました。

日本は美しい文化を持っているし日本人であることを誇りに思っています。でも「年齢に沿ったレールが敷かれていること」に対しては非常に窮屈に感じていました。有難いことに私の両親は全くそういう考え方ではないのですし、私は日本社会の中で自由な生き方を選んできたタイプだとは思います。それでも日々の暮らしの中で日本社会が作るその空気を感じてうんざりすることは時々ありました。Ariと年齢についてよく話しますがメキシコにもそう言った保守的な風潮があるそうです。

今年の11月に17歳になる無限大の可能性を秘めたダニエラへ。倍の年齢の34歳の私から「10代だからこその悩みや息苦しさがあるかもしれないけど、世界は本当に広いから常に広い視野を持って、自分のやりたいことや興味のあること、ワクワクする自分の感情に正直に向き合って、挑戦と冒険を重ねてさらに魅力的な女性になっていってね。」と伝えたいです。大人になった彼女にまた会える日を楽しみにしています。

Trip to Mexico with my Friend Ari Part 3: Memories with Ari’s a little Sister Daniela

Around a year and a half ago, I made friends with Ari in Vancouver. I would like to continue writing about my 10-day trip to Mexico in July last year to meet her and the serendipitous encounters I had there.

Memories with Ari’s a little Sister Daniela

During my 10-day trip to Mexico, I had the privilege of staying at Ari’s house where her family lived. Ari had a younger sister named Daniela, who was 15 years old at the time. She was adorable, could speak English, and was very friendly. She engaged in many conversations with me. While most regular middle school students were still attending school during the time I visited Mexico, Daniela was exceptionally talented and finished all her classes earlier than her classmates, allowing her to enter her summer vacation earlier than others. As a result, we had plenty of free time and were able to go out together on several occasions.

① Portrait Drawn by Daniela

Daniela loved drawing, and she presented me with a portrait she drew of me. I thought her use of colors reflected the vibrant surroundings she grew up in, surrounded by colorful buildings in Mexico. In the drawing, I appeared more like a Mexican rather than a Japanese person. She used a photo taken when we bought sunflowers to decorate Ari’s house from a nearby market. This portrait is my treasure, and I carefully filed it away, keeping it in my home in Canada.

② Went to the Local Market Near Ari’s House

There was a market near Ari’s house, and Daniela and I went there together to buy groceries requested by Ari’s mother. Ari’s house was located in Cuautitlan Izcalli, about an hour’s drive from Mexico City, and it was a non-touristy, very local place. For me, it was an exciting market experience. So, whenever someone went to the market, I tagged along and visited multiple times. It was interesting to see the contrast in enthusiasm between Ari’s family, who considered the market part of their daily routine, and me, who was thrilled by the experience.

③ Teotihuacan Pyramids

It is located approximately 50 kilometers northeast of Mexico City, Teotihuacan is a vast ancient city that was the center of the Teotihuacan civilization, thriving from the 2nd to the 6th century BC. It is registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987. Teotihuacan covers an area of about 20 square kilometers and features structures such as the “Pyramid of the Sun” and the “Pyramid of the Moon,” as well as a 5-kilometer-long “Avenue of the Dead.” I believe you can sense the grandeur of the site by watching this video.

④ Tepotzotlán Sightseeing

Tepotzotlán is a small town located about 30 minutes by bus from Ari’s home. On this day, Ari’s mother and Daniela’s boyfriend also joined the outing. The San Francisco Javier Church stands in the central part of this town. Despite its small size, the town is rich in Mexican history, making it a satisfying day trip.

The photo attached here was taken while Ari and I were playing and exchanging sunglasses at a café we visited after going to the church.

Interaction with Daniela

The most memorable conversation I had with Daniela was about her aspirations for the future. However, she told me it was a secret that she hadn’t shared with anyone else, so I won’t write about it. Daniela loves reading and possesses an impressive amount of knowledge for a 15-year-old girl. She consistently achieves top grades in school. Furthermore, I could sense her good taste in photography and fashion through the pictures she takes and the clothes she wears. I am very excited to see what the future holds for Daniela, who is so curious about the outside world.

As a thank you for staying with Daniela, who loves reading, for ten days, I presented her with this colorful bookmark I found at a market in Mexico City. I was happy to see her delighted by the gift!

Thoughts on Age in Japan and a Message to Daniela, Who Will Turn 17 This Year

I believe that people can challenge themselves with new things regardless of their age, and aging is something wonderful. I like myself much more now than when I was in my teens or twenties. With each passing year, I feel that I grow mentally stronger and my ability to understand others’ emotions broadens. Furthermore, compared to when I was younger, I can distinguish between things I should worry about and things that are pointless, and I have become better at controlling my emotions, which has made life mentally easier for me.

Japan has a beautiful culture, and I take pride in being Japanese. I consider myself someone who has chosen a free way of life even within Japanese society. However, I have felt extremely suffocated by the “rails aligned with age.” Fortunately, my parents do not have such a mindset, but I sometimes get tired of feeling the air created by Japanese society in my daily life. Ari and I often discuss age, but I’ve heard that there is a similar conservative trend in Mexico as well.

To Daniela, who will turn 17 this November, with infinite possibilities. As a 34-year-old who has twice your age, I would like to convey the following message: “Being a teenager may bring worries and feelings of suffocation, but the world is truly vast. Always have a broad perspective, follow your interests and passions, and embrace the excitement within you. Continuously challenge yourself and embark on adventures to become an even more fascinating woman.” I look forward to the day when I can meet her as an adult.

When you gather the courage to take a step outside, you can encounter further adventures. In my case, going to Canada led to a 10-day stay in Mexico.
