約1年半前にバンクーバーで初めて出来た親友Ari。去年の7月に彼女に会うために行った10日間のメキシコへの旅とそこでの一期一会ついて引き続き書いていきたいと思います。

Ari達が案内してくれたメキシコシティ堪能コース

ラグニージャ市場→ 青いタイルの家「Sanborns」でランチ→テキーラとメスカルの博物館の近くでディナー→革命記念塔のライトアップ

現地メキシコ人の皆さんとともにメキシコシティを散策する時間はとても贅沢に感じました。各所の説明をAri達との思い出とともにご紹介していくので、もしメキシコ旅行に行く予定のある方がこの記事を読んでいたら是非参考にしてくださいね。

①ラグニージャ市場

メキシコシティへの観光の楽しみの一つは市場巡り。私も滞在期間中5カ所の市場に行きましたが、またメキシコに行くなら再度訪れるのは「ラグニージャ市場」のみだけで良いかもと思うぐらいダントツで魅力的でした。

この市場は別名「泥棒市」と呼ばれています。泥棒がお金持ちの家から盗んだ物を売っていたことが始まりだかとか。骨董品から古本、アクセサリー、古着、家具、電化製品、アート、民芸品、食器までありとあらゆるものが販売されています。「ラグニージャ市場で買ったものを集めれば、ヘリコプターが作れる」という、有名なフレーズがあるほどです。

このように多種多様の露店が立ち並びます。その数なんと1000店以上だそうです。

②青いタイルの家「Sanborns」でランチ

親友Ariの母国メキシコへの旅①でご紹介したべジャス・アルテス宮殿の近くに(その過去記事はこちら→https://ayakanoikigaidou.com/post-1484/)誰もが足を止めて見惚れてしまう美しい建物「青いタイルの家」があります。1903年にオリサバ公爵の家として建設されたバロック建築です。

建物内には「Saborns/サーボンズ」というメキシコで有名なチェーンのファミリーレストラン兼デパートが入っています。Sabornsはメキシコ内に沢山あるのですがここが最も人気でいつも混んでいるそうです。装飾もゴージャスで天井が高く開放感があり、ファミレスとは思えないエレガントな雰囲気です。

③テキーラとメスカルの博物館の近くでディナー

この博物館ではテキーラとメスカルの製造過程を展示しています。しかし現地メキシコ人のAri達曰く、この博物館自体は特にお勧めではないということなので中には入りませんでした。笑

しかしこの動画のように博物館の周りにメキシコ民族音楽を奏でる楽団(マリアッチと呼ばれます)が沢山いて、聴覚と視覚でメキシコの空気感に浸ることができるのでここに来るのはお勧めです。聞いている人々も自由に踊っていたり、歌っていたりとても平和的な明るい空間でした。

博物館の近くには沢山のレストランが並んでいます。この動画のようにマリアッチがテーブルまで来てメキシカン音楽を演奏してくれます。Ariの友人がオーダーしたメキシコ料理の食べ方やお酒の飲み方を教えてくれたり、異文化を学ぶとても有意義な時間でした。メキシコ料理ってたいて食べる前に複数の調味料をかけてライムを絞ってからやっと食べ始めるので、それまでの工程が多いですよね。笑

④ディナー後は革命記念塔のライトアップへ

1910年〜1938年にかけて建設された革命記念塔は、その名の通り1910年〜1917年にかけて起きた「メキシコ革命」を記念するためのモニュメントです。67mもの高さがあり「世界で最も高い凱旋門」と呼ばれることもあるそうです。メキシコ人の皆さんってダンスが大好きですぐ踊ります。この革命記念塔の近くでも誰かが演奏していてその音楽に合わせてAriの友人にダンスを教えてもらいましたが、ダンスが下手な私は全く踊れなかったです。笑

そんな他愛もない瞬間もとても良い思い出です。

スペイン語を話すAriと友人たちとの交流

スペイン語で友達と話すAriは英語で会話をする時よりも口数が多く、沢山のジョークを言って笑っていました。スペイン語は全く解読不可能な私ですが、Ariの笑いのセンスの良さを感じることが出来ました。また友人達と沢山笑って過ごしているAriが見れてとても幸せな気持ちになりました。

話す言語が変わるとキャラクターも変わるとよく言いますが、それは正解だと思います。例えば私が英語を流暢に話せるようになったとしても日本語を話している時の自分とは違うように思います。根っこの部分はもちろん一緒なんですけどね！

Ariの友人たちの中の何人かは英語は少し話せる方がいたのと、彼らが話したことをAriが英語で通訳してくれたのでなんとかコミュニケーションが取れました。しかし全てを訳すことはやはり難しいので、スペイン語が理解できたらどんなに良いだろうともどかしさを感じました。でも言葉の壁を超えて、彼らの温かい人柄やユーモアを強く感じることが出来てとても素晴らしい日でした。美しいメキシコシティを見せてくれたAriと彼らに心から感謝しています。

A Trip to Mexico with My Dear Friend Ari Part 2 / Exploring Mexico City with Ari and Her Friends

Approximately a year and a half ago, I met my Mexican dear friend Ari in Vancouver. I would like to continue writing about my 10-day trip to Mexico in July of last year to see her and the encounters I had there.

It was a luxury to be able to explore Mexico City with local Mexicans. I will provide descriptions of each place we visited, along with my memories with Ari, so if anyone is planning a trip to Mexico and happens to come across this article, I hope you find it helpful.

① Marcado de Lagunilla

One of the joys of tourism in Mexico City is visiting the markets. During my stay, I went to five different markets, but the one I would definitely revisit if I go back to Mexico would be “La Lagunilla Market.” It was by far the most fascinating market, to the extent that I felt it was enough to visit only this one.

This market is also known as the “thieves’ market.” It originated from thieves selling stolen items from wealthy homes. You can find a wide range of items for sale, including antiques, books, accessories, vintage clothing, furniture, electronics, art, crafts, and tableware. It is said that if you gather all the things you bought at La Lagunilla Market, you could build a helicopter. That’s how diverse the stalls are. In fact, there are over 1,000 stores in this market.

② Lunch at “Sanborns ” Casa de los Azulejos

Near the Palace of Fine Arts (mentioned in my previous article about my trip to Mexico with Ari→https://ayakanoikigaidou.com/post-1484/), there is a beautiful building called the “Casa de los Azulejos” It was constructed in 1903 as the residence of the Count of Orizaba in Baroque style.

Inside the building, there is a famous Mexican chain restaurant and department store called “Sanborns.” Although there are many Sanborns locations throughout Mexico, this one is probably the most popular and always crowded. The decoration is gorgeous, with high ceilings and an elegant atmosphere that is far from a typical family restaurant.

③ Dinner near Museo Del Tequila y Mezcal

The Museum exhibits the manufacturing processes of tequila and mezcal. However, according to Ari’s local friends, the museum itself is not particularly recommended, so we didn’t go inside.

However, as shown in this video, there are many Mariachi bands (performing Mexican folk music) around the museum, creating an atmosphere where you can immerse yourself in the ambiance of Mexico through both auditory and visual experiences. People were freely dancing and singing, making it a peaceful and lively space.

There are many restaurants lined up near the museum. As shown in the video, Mariachi bands come to the tables and perform Mexican music. Ari’s friends taught us how to eat Mexican food and drink alcohol, which was a very enriching experience of learning about different cultures. Mexican cuisine often involves applying multiple condiments and squeezing lime before finally starting to eat, so the process before eating is quite elaborate.

④Illuminated Monumento a la Revolución

”Monumento a la Revolución”, constructed between 1910 and 1938, is a monument dedicated to the “Mexican Revolution” that took place from 1910 to 1917. Standing at a height of 67 meters, it is sometimes referred to as the “tallest triumphal arch in the world.” Mexican people are known for their quickness to dance, and even near the Monument, someone was playing music, so Ari’s friend taught her how to dance to the music. However, I am not good at dancing at all, so I couldn’t dance along haha. Even those simple moments became precious memories.

Ari, who speaks Spanish and Interaction with her friends

Ari, conversing with her friends in Spanish, spoke more and shared lots of jokes, making everyone laugh. Although I cannot decipher Spanish at all, I could sense Ari’s great sense of humor through her laughter. Seeing Ari enjoying and laughing with her friends made me feel incredibly happy. It is often said that when the language changes, the character changes as well, and I believe that is true. For example, even if I become fluent in English, I feel like I am different when speaking Japanese. Of course, the core essence remains the same!

Among Ari’s friends, some could speak a bit of English, and Ari translated their conversations for me. It allowed us to communicate to some extent. However, it was still challenging to translate everything, and I felt frustrated, thinking how great it would be if I could understand Spanish. Nevertheless, I was able to strongly feel their warm personalities and humor, transcending the language barrier. It was a wonderful day, and I sincerely thank Ari and her friends.

Meeting Ari in Vancouver was the starting point of my trip to Mexico. Being able to share time with them in Mexico City is a treasure in my life. It was an incredibly luxurious experience to explore Mexico City while immersing myself in the local culture and being surrounded by Mexican people. When I mustered up the courage to venture out into the world, I encountered numerous challenges and, of course, had moments of discouragement. However, in the end, I have never regretted taking that leap.
