約1年半前にバンクーバーで出会って親友になったAri。そして母国に帰った彼女に会うために去年の7月に10日間メキシコに滞在しました。彼女と巡ったメキシコシティのおすすめ美術館５選を今日は書いていこうと思います。Ariのおすすめを見せてくれたので、観光客だと見過ごしてしまいそうな少しマイナーな美術館も入っています。
メキシコの首都であるメキシコシティには約１３０件もの美術館・博物館があります。世界で最も美術館の多い街といわれています。
この街では独自の伝統的な芸術と世界最先端の近代的な美術と建築の両方を楽しめます。伝統とモダンが共存するという特徴は東京との類似点だと思います。想像以上にレベルの高い展示品が揃えてあり、情報量が多く時間が足りませんでした。
そのため彼女のおすすめではない展覧会には行きませんでしたが、世界的に有名な建築家によってデザインされた美術館も多く、外観を見るだけでも絶対的に価値があります。

国立美術館
１９８２年に建てられた重厚感のあるこちらの美しい建物には、メキシコの芸術品の最も重要とされているコレクション４０００点以上が展示されています。
全ての作品を十分に見るには１日中いる必要があります。さらに建物自体の装飾も美しく見所が多いため、何度も訪れたくなる美術館です。皆さんご存知フリーダ・カーロ、ベラスコなどのメキシコを代表するアーティストの作品が常設展示されていて、これでもかというほどメキシコの芸術の素晴らしさを目の当たりにすることが出来ます。１６〜１８世紀末のスペインによる植民地時代から２０世紀までの美術品が展示されています。
メキシコ国立人類学博物館
メキシコ全土から希少価値の高い重要な出土品や文化遺産が全て集められた場所です。尋常ではない情報量の多さなので、全てを理解しながらゆっくり堪能しようと思うと１日でも足りません。おそらく１週間は必要です。この博物館２階建てになっていて、２つのコンセプトに分かれています。
１階ー古代メソアメリカ文明と考古学
メキシコ全土から発見された壁画や石像、土偶、遺跡の一部など、非常に重要な文化財が沢山保存されています。
2階ーメキシコ民族の各文化
メキシコの大きな特徴のひとつは、今でも各地に多種多様な民族が暮らしていることです。２階エリアでは、メキシコ民族の生活や祭事、伝統衣装やアクセサリーなど色彩豊かな美しい独自の文化を堪能することが出来ます。
ソウマヤ美術館
メキシコ出身の実業家カルロス・スリムのコレクションを展示している美術館です。１５世紀から２０世紀のヨーロッパ芸術をメインに７万点以上の芸術品が所蔵されています。「ソウマヤ」とは彼の亡くなった奥様の名前だそうです。多くのメキシコ人々は芸術鑑賞のために旅行をすることが出来ないと考えていた大富豪のカルロスは、その人々のために無料でこの美術館に入場できるようにしました。
設計者はメキシコ人のフェルナンド・ロメロです。
この日は館内でパーティが催されていたため、中に入ることは出来ませんでしたが、約１６０００枚の六角形のモザイクタイルで作られたモダンな建築を見るだけでも価値がありました。ちょうど夕日に照らされた美しいソウマヤ美術館を見ることが出来ました。
フランツ・メイヤー美術館
１９８６年にオープン。ドイツ出身のフランツ・メイヤーによる個人コレクションが展示されている歴史的建造物です。主に１６〜１９世紀のメキシコ、ヨーロッパ、東洋の陶器、彫刻、家具や織物などの装飾品がメインです。Ari的には最もお気に入りの外観の美術館だそうです。
カサ・デル・ラーゴ
１９５９年にメキシコ国立自治大学の初のキャンパス外文化センターとして設立。こちらは美術館ではありませんが、文化センターとして小さな展覧会が開催されていました。この展覧会は正直全く覚えていません。笑
しかしこの建物はチャプルテペク公園内にあるため、この写真のように建物の周りには椅子が設置されています。自然にかこまれながらAriと心地の良い時間を過ごし、とてもリラックス出来た場所だったのでおすすめです。
Ariとの美術館巡りの道中
メキシコの各美術館の芸術や建築を堪能できたのはもちろん素晴らしい時間でした。それと同時に思い出に残っているのは各美術館に向かう道中でのAriとの思い出です。
国立美術館に行くまでの道中にも多くの歴史的建造物あり、Ariによる解説付きのダウンタウン散策はとてもいい思い出です。
こちらの写真は、道で販売されていたフルーツジュースを飲んで完全にお腹を壊した私と日差しに疲れたAri。弱った私たちはメキシコ国立人類学博物館の外のベンチで休憩していました。その時私たちのこのメキシコの旅を「Adventures of Grandmothers」と名付けました。そしてお腹を壊すからやめたほうがいいと言うAriからの忠告を聞かずに、突然話かけてきた見ず知らずのおじさんのおすすめを信じて、フルーツジュースを試した私の責任だと彼女に言われたのも良い思い出です。笑
美術館巡りの途中でお腹が空いて入ったレストラン。Ariとお互いの国のユーモアについて話した記憶があります。
全ての美術館を巡り終えた後のカフェにて。スタッフの方がAriの名前をAbiとコップに書き間違えて、日本人名の私の名前は合っていることに2人で笑っていました。
全ての美術館で過ごした時間もAriとの美術館巡りの道中も１分１秒全て大切な思い出です。

Travel with friend Ari to Mexico ⑥ – Top 5 Recommended Museums in Mexico City
In today’s article, I will share the top 5 recommended museums in Mexico City that I visited with my friend Ari during my 10-day stay in Mexico in July last year. Ari showed me her favorite museums, including some lesser-known ones that tourists might overlook.
Mexico City, the capital of Mexico, is home to approximately 130 museums. It is often referred to as the city with the most museums in the world. Here, you can enjoy both traditional and cutting-edge modern art and architecture. The coexistence of tradition and modernity is a characteristic that I find similar to Tokyo. The quality of the exhibitions exceeded my expectations, and there was so much information to absorb that time was not enough.
While I didn’t have a chance to visit all the exhibitions that were not recommended by Ari, many of the museums in Mexico City are designed by world-renowned architects, and even just seeing the exteriors is definitely worthwhile.

National Museum of Art
This magnificent building, constructed in 1982, houses over 4,000 of Mexico’s most important art pieces. To fully appreciate all the works, you would need to spend an entire day here. The interior decorations of the building itself are also beautiful, making it a museum you would want to visit multiple times. The permanent exhibition includes works by well-known Mexican artists such as Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, showcasing the brilliance of Mexican art. The museum displays artworks from the late 16th to the 20th century, covering the colonial period under Spanish rule to the modern era.
National Museum of Anthropology
Mexico It is a place where rare and valuable archaeological artifacts and cultural heritage from all over Mexico are gathered. The amount of information available is extraordinary, so it would take more than a day to fully understand everything. You would probably need a week. The museum is two stories high and is divided into two main concepts.
First Floor – Ancient Mesoamerican Civilizations and Archaeology It houses a large number of highly important cultural assets, such as murals, stone statues, figurines, and parts of archaeological sites, discovered throughout Mexico.
Second Floor – Various Cultures of Mexican Ethnicities One of the distinct features of Mexico is its “ethnic diversity,” with various ethnic groups still living in different parts of the country. On the second floor, you can appreciate the vibrant and beautiful cultures of Mexican ethnic groups, including their lifestyles, festivals, traditional costumes, and accessories.
Soumaya Museum
It is an art museum that displays the collection of Mexican businessman Carlos Slim. It houses over 70,000 art pieces, mainly focusing on European art from the 15th to the 20th century. The museum is named after his late wife, Soumaya. Recognizing that many Mexicans couldn’t afford to travel for art appreciation, the wealthy Carlos made the museum free for the public. The museum was designed by Mexican architect Fernando Romero.
On the day I visited, there was a party taking place inside, so I couldn’t enter. However, just seeing the modern architecture made of approximately 16,000 hexagonal mosaic tiles was worth it. I was able to admire the beautiful Soumaya Museum illuminated by the sunset.
Franz Mayer Museum
Opened in 1986, it is a historic building that houses a personal collection by Franz Mayer, who was born in Germany. The main exhibits are decorative items such as pottery, sculptures, furniture, and textiles from the 16th to 19th centuries from Mexico, Europe, and the East. According to Ari, it is her favorite museum in terms of its exterior appearance.
Casa del Lago
Established in 1959 as the first off-campus cultural center of the National Autonomous University of Mexico. Although it is not a museum, small exhibitions were held at this cultural center. I honestly don’t remember much about these exhibitions, haha. However, this building is located within Chapultepec Park, so chairs are placed around the building like in this photo. It was a very relaxing place where Ari and I could enjoy a pleasant time surrounded by nature, so I recommend it.
On the way to visit Each museum with Ari
It was a wonderful time to appreciate the art and architecture of each museum in Mexico. At the same time, what stands out in my memories is on the way to visit each museum with Ari There were many historic buildings on the way to the National Art Museum, and Ari provided explanations, making it a very memorable experience to explore downtown Mexico City.
This photo shows me suffering from a severe stomachache after drinking fruit juice sold on the street, and Ari exhausted from the sun. We were resting on a bench outside the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City. At that time, we named this trip in Mexico “Adventures of Grandmothers.” It was also a good memory when Ari advised me not to try the fruit juice because it would upset my stomach, but I didn’t listen and tried it anyway, and later she blamed me, saying it was my responsibility. Haha.
The restaurant we entered when we got hungry during our museum tour. I remember talking about the sense of humor in our respective countries with Ari.
At the café after completing the tour of all the museums. The staff mistakenly wrote Ari’s name as “Abi” on the cup, and we laughed together because they got my Japanese name right.
Every moment spent in the museums and on the way to visit each museum with Ariare all precious memories. Ari, who I met in Vancouver and became my best friend. I truly think that it was worth taking on the challenge of going to Vancouver; otherwise, I wouldn’t have had these beautiful memories with her in my life.
