皆さんは「The World is Your Oyster」というフレーズをご存知ですか？直訳すると「あなたの世界は牡蠣です」というよくわからない意味になります。
実は「世界はあなたのもの、あなたの可能性は無限大」というとてもポジティブなフレーズなのです。
その由来はシェークスピアの『ウィンザーの陽気な女房たち』に出てくる登場人物が言ったこちらのセリフ。
“Why then the world’s mine oyster, which I with sword will open.”
「世界が牡蠣のようなものならば、この剣で世界をこじ開けてみせよう。」
この由来を聞くと納得できますよね。
1年前パートナーのジョセフとデートを始めた頃に「牡蠣が大好物」と伝えたらこのフレーズを教えてくれました。それ以来私のお気に入りになりました。

ここ最近の仕事後の無計画デート
気の向くままにギャスタウンへ
私達はよくほぼ同じ時間に仕事が終わるので、時々仕事後に待ち合わせて無計画に散歩をしながら帰宅します。お互いに家でやりたいこともあるので、毎回がっつり何処かに行くというよりも、散歩と軽いおやつをつまみながら帰宅する感じです。先日は久しぶりに「ギャスタウン」というバンクーバーにある有名な観光地の1つに行きました。
この写真は私がバンクーバーに着いたばかりの頃2022年1月に行った時の写真です。冬ならではの雨のバンクーバーがよく似合う街並みです。
名前の由来は、このエリアに1867年に初めて酒場を開いた方の名前が「ギャシー」というからだそうです。この方がきっかけで当時は「ギャスタウン」がダウンタウンの中心地として栄え始めました。
そのため「ギャスタウン」は「バンクーバー発祥の地」とも呼ばれています。
現在他のダウンタウンエリアは近代的なビルも並んでいるのですが、ギャスタウンには19世紀に作られたレトロなレンガ作りの建物が立ち並んでいます。その中にはレストランやお洒落なショップやカフェが入っていて観光客以外にも地元の人も食事や買い物を楽しみます。
ここのエリアを歩くだけでまるで19世紀のバンクーバーにタイムスリップしたような錯覚に陥ります。
この写真は去年の晩秋に撮影したものです。夏よりも哀愁が漂っていて個人的には秋冬の方がギャスタウンらしいと思います。
こちらの蒸気時計が有名で15分に1回蒸気でレトロな音を奏でてくれます。写真スポットとして人気なので、いつも人だかりが出来ています。
偶然にも有名な自転車リレーに遭遇
この日にたまたま遭遇したのがこちらの自転車のレース「ギャスタウン・グランド・プリックス」
北米で有名な1日のみの自転車リレーで、ギャスタウン内にルートが設定されています。
各国からエリートサイクリストが集まっており、今年はなんと50周年記念。さらにコロナでの2年間休止期間を経て、ついに今年開催されたこともあり、非常に盛り上がっていました。その人だかりと歓声に惹きつけられ、私達も見に行きました。ものすごいスピードでお互い近距離で走る迫力に釘付けになりました。この方々の精神力って計り知れないでしょうね。是非この動画をご覧ください。そのスピードが感じられるはずです。
彼らも「The world is my oyster !」って思っているかもしれません。
夏のギャスタウンは皆テラスで食事やお酒を楽しんでいて騒々しく活気があります。秋冬のギャスタウンとは全く違います。
オイスターバーで祝杯「The World is Your Oyster !」
レースを見ながら、歩いていくとたまたま見つけたのがこちらのオイスターバー「ロドニーズ・オイスター・ハウス」です。
私たちは小腹が空いたので入ることにしました。こちらのレストランはまさにギャスタウンならではの19世紀に建てられたレトロな建物を使っており、店内の雰囲気は趣があってとても素敵です。
1年前にデートをし始めた頃にも一度牡蠣を一緒に食べた思い出を話しながら、これからの将来について話していました。
最近、私の職場はスタッフの出勤日数を減らさざるおえない状況になっています。（バンクーバーでは季節やビジネスの変動によって時々あることです）
お給料は減ってしまいますが、捉え方次第。その自由な時間を新しい挑戦と自分の将来のためへの準備の時間に費やせます。私はその時間をブログ執筆へ、そしてブログをきっかけに始めたライターの仕事が、またいくつか新たに決まりました。
自分に起こることは全て常にパーフェクト。失うものはないもない。ピンチはチャンスです。
失敗は学びに。人生本当に色々な事があるけど、未来を明るく照らすのは自分の捉え方とその時の選択と行動次第です。世界情勢や環境は目まぐるしく変わっていきます。それをポジティブに対応していく強さと柔軟性が要です。
「The world is your oyster !」このフレーズとともに、ジョセフと牡蠣を食べながら2人の明るい未来に祝杯を上げた日でした。 
働き方への価値観の変化
バンクーバーに来て変化した価値観の1つは「働き方」です。日本の大企業で働いていたころ、出勤日数が減る、何があるかわからないという危機感は正直あまりなかったです。
日本でもはるか昔から終わりつつある終身雇用の文化。
自分自身の力で生き抜いて行くためには、型にとらわれずに新しいことへの挑戦を続けて、自分自身のスキルを磨いていくべきです。そういった価値観の変化はバンクーバーに来て良かったと思える大きな理由のひとつです。
英語学習はもちろんですが海外の社会で働く経験は、精神的な強さを得ながら自分の視野が何倍も広がります。

The day We Celebrated in Gastown – The World is Your Oyster
Do you know the phrase “The World is Your Oyster”?
When translated literally, it doesn’t make much sense, as it means “Your world is an oyster.”
However, the actual meaning is quite beautiful: “The world is yours, and your possibilities are endless.”
The origin of this phrase can be traced back to Shakespeare’s play “The Merry Wives of Windsor,” where one of the characters utters the following line: “Why then the world’s mine oyster, which I with sword will open.” Understanding this origin, the phrase becomes clear and meaningful.
I learned about this phrase when I told my partner Joseph, whom I started dating about a year ago, that I love oysters. Since then, it has become one of my favorites.

Unplanned Post-Work Date
Go with the flow and head to Gastown
In Gastown Recently, Joseph and I decided to meet up after work and take unplanned walks while enjoying some snacks on our way home. Since our work hours align quite well, we often meet up and have a leisurely stroll, rather than going somewhere specific. One day, we decided to visit Gastown, a famous tourist spot in Vancouver.
The photo above was taken when I first arrived in Vancouver in January 2022. The rainy Vancouver streets suit the city’s atmosphere, especially during winter.
Gastown gets its name from “Gassy” Jack Deighton, who opened the area’s first saloon in 1867. This led to Gastown becoming the bustling center of downtown Vancouver. As a result, Gastown is often referred to as the “birthplace of Vancouver.” While other downtown areas feature modern buildings, Gastown retains its 19th-century charm with brick buildings. The area is home to restaurants, stylish shops, and cafes that both tourists and locals enjoy for dining and shopping. Taking a walk in this area feels like traveling back in time to 19th-century Vancouver.
The photo above was taken in late autumn last year. I personally think that Gastown truly captures its essence during the fall and winter seasons.
One famous spot in Gastown is the steam clock, which chimes with a retro sound every 15 minutes. It has become a popular photo spot, so there is always a crowd gathered around it.
Encountering a Famous Bicycle Relay by Chance
During our walk, we happened to come across the Gastown Grand Prix, a famous one-day bicycle relay race in North America. The race route is set within Gastown, and elite cyclists from various countries gather for this event. This year marked its 50th anniversary, as the race had been canceled for the past two years due to the pandemic. The atmosphere was electric, with a huge crowd and cheers all around. We were captivated by the cyclists’ incredible speed as they raced in close proximity to each other. The mental strength of these athletes is truly immeasurable. Perhaps they, too, think, “The world is my oyster!” Gastown in the summer is vibrant and lively, with people enjoying meals and drinks on terraces. It’s a completely different atmosphere from autumn and winter in Gastown.
Celebrated at the Oyster Bar – “The World is Your Oyster!”
As we watched the race, we stumbled upon Rodney’s Oyster House, an oyster bar. Feeling a bit hungry, we decided to go in. The restaurant is housed in a retro building from the 19th century, perfectly capturing the essence of Gastown. The interior ambiance is delightful.
While enjoying oysters, we reminisced about the time we had oysters together when we first started dating a year ago. We also discussed our future aspirations.
Recently, due to the changing business dynamics and seasonal fluctuations in Vancouver, my workplace has had to reduce staff working days.
Although my salary will decrease, it’s all about perspective. I can now dedicate this free time to new challenges and preparing for my future. As a result, I started writing a blog, which led to three new freelance writing opportunities. I believe that everything that happens to us is always perfect, and there is nothing to lose. Challenges are opportunities, and failures are lessons. Life is full of various experiences, but it’s up to us to perceive them positively and make choices and actions that illuminate our future. The world’s circumstances and environment are constantly changing, and it requires strength and adaptability to respond positively.
With the phrase “The world is your oyster!” in mind, Joseph and I raised a toast to our bright future while enjoying oysters together.
A Shift in Values Regarding Work
One of the values that have changed for me since coming to Vancouver is my perspective on work. When I worked for a large company in Japan, I didn’t have much sense of urgency that my attendance could be reduced or that I could be let go if something happened.
The culture of lifetime employment, which has been gradually fading away in Japan.
To survive and thrive on my own, I need to continue challenging myself and honing my skills without being confined to a specific mould. This change in values is one of the significant reasons why I feel coming to Vancouver was a good decision.
In addition to learning English, gaining work experience in a foreign society expands my horizons multiple times over while strengthening my mental resilience.
