バンクーバーで3カ国の文化を味わった3日間〜イタリアンデー、フレンチミュージックライブ、グリークデー〜/3-day Experience of Three Cultures in Vancouver – Italian Day, French Music Festival, Greek Day-

バンクーバーの大きな特徴として多種多様の国々からの移民や留学生が非常に多いです。電車に乗っていると毎日英語以外にもスペイン語、中国語、フランス語など様々な言語が聞こえてきます。

各言語にはそれぞれの文化があるので、その違いが語学習得における興味深さではあります。ただ言葉の壁で苦労している身としては、世界中の人たちがもし一つの同じ言語を話してたらどんなに楽だろうと思います笑

でも異国の文化の違いを体験するのはやはり楽しい！そんなわけでここ最近、パートナージョセフとバンクーバーで開催された3カ国のフェスティバルに立て続けに行ってきたのでご紹介します。

①イタリアンデー　6/11

「Little Italy」と呼ばれるコマーシャルドライブという場所で、イタリア文化をお祝いするために行われるお祭りです。

1977年から1982年の間に開催されていましたが、その後は開催中止されました。その後2010年に再開するも、コロナをきっかけに再び休止して3年間たった今年についに再び開催されました。
14ブロックのストリートを歩行者天国にしてたくさんのイタリアンフードの屋台や小物や服の販売ブースが並んでいて、ミュージックライブスペースもあります。毎年20〜30万人以上来客があるビックイベントです。

私がこのイベントに行って魅力的に感じたことは２つあります。
1つ目はこちらのパフォーマンス。イタリアンミュージックならではの情熱的な歌声と演奏に虜になりその場から動けなかったです。

子供用のステージも設置されていました。可愛い！

2つ目は屋台の味のクオリティの高さです。正直バンクーバーに来てからというもの値段が高い割に味がいまいちという経験を度々しているので期待していなかったのですが、このイベントに出店しているイタリアンフードはとても美味しかったです！これも大きな人気の理由の1つだとか。
私たちのお気に入りは「Calzone」でした。

②フレンチミュージックライブ 6/17

パートナーとお互いの仕事後に会った時にたまたま近くでやっていたので、ぶらっと立ち寄りました。２人ともフランス語は全くわからないものの、想像以上にテイストの良いこちらのバンドの演奏に心奪われました。こちらの動画から聞いていただけます。

少し話題がずれますが、この日職場で植物を買ったあとに予定外にこのライブに行ったので、荷物になるし買うタイミング間違えたなと思っていました。
でもライブ会場にいた1人の男性が、「植物をライブに連れてくるのいいね！その植物も美しい音楽を聞けて喜んでるよ。」と私達に話しかけてくれました。本当に何事も捉え方次第だと改めて思った瞬間でした。

③グリークデー 6/25

こちらは1974年から開催されているイベントでギリシャの文化を祝し、人々に共有するためのイベントです。ブロードウェイの5ブロック( McDonald ～ Blenheim 間の約1km)が閉鎖され、道にはたくさんのグリークフードの屋台が立ち並び、ミュージックライブも開催されます。毎年約10万人以上の来客があるそうです。

ギリシャの小物も売っていて、個人的にはこのスリッパが可愛かったです。

古着の販売スペースもあり非常に賑わっていました。

しかしイタリアンフェスティバルより規模が小さく屋台の出店数が少ないせいか、すべての屋台に長蛇の列。そのため私達はこの通りから少し離れたグリークレストランでディナーしました。偶然見つけた「SIMPATICO」というレストランです。
とても素敵な外観のお店で、サーバーの男性もお茶目でサービスの質もよく、ご飯も美味しく、大満足のグリークデーの締めくくりとなりました。

バンクーバーに滞在しているからこそ出来ること

本国出身の人たちが開催する様々な異国文化のイベントを体験できるのは、多種多様の国の人々が住むバンクーバーだからこそです。

仕事や勉強ももちろん大切ですが、直接こういう体験もする時間もとても大切にしてます。
コロナをきっかけに、オンラインでの語学勉強や仕事が手段の一つになっています。非常に便利だし可能性を広げてくれることは確かです。

でも直接肌で感じる経験は、パソコン上では感じれない臨場感や空気感、緊張感、匂い、人との直接のコミュニケーションがあります。

3-day Experience of Three Cultures in Vancouver – Italian Day, French Music Festival, Greek Day-

Vancouver is known for its diverse population, with immigrants and international students from various countries. When you ride the train, you can hear languages other than English, such as Spanish, Chinese, and French. Each language represents its own culture, and the differences make language learning fascinating. However, as someone who struggles with the language barrier, I can’t help but think how much easier it would be if people around the world spoke the same language, haha. Nevertheless, experiencing the differences in foreign cultures is truly enjoyable. That’s why I recently attended three festivals representing different countries in Vancouver with my partner Joseph, and I’d like to share my experience with you.

Italian Day – June 11

Italian Day is a festival held in a place called “Little Italy” on Commercial Drive to celebrate Italian culture. It was originally held between 1977 and 1982 but was discontinued. It resumed in 2010, only to be suspended again for three years due to the pandemic. This year, after a three-year hiatus, it was finally held again. Fourteen blocks of streets were pedestrianized, and there were numerous Italian food stalls, as well as booths selling accessories and clothing. There was also a music live stage. This event attracts more than 200,000 to 300,000 visitors every year.

There were two things that I found captivating. The first was the performances. I was enthralled by the passionate singing and music unique to Italian music and couldn’t move from the spot.

There was also a stage for children. It was adorable!

The second thing was the high quality of the food at the stalls. To be honest, since coming to Vancouver, I’ve often had the experience of overpriced food that didn’t taste great, so I wasn’t expecting much from the Italian food at this event. However, the Italian food sold at the festival was delicious! That’s one of the reasons why it’s so popular. Our favorite was the “Calzone.”

French Music Festival – June 17

My partner and I happened to come across this festival after work and decided to stop by. Neither of us understands French, but we were captivated by the performances of the band, which had a surprisingly great taste in music. You can listen to their music in this video.

This is slightly off-topic, but on that day, after buying plants at work, I unexpectedly went to this live performance, so I thought I made a mistake in the timing of my purchases and that the plants would be a burden. However, a man who was at the concert venue approached us and said, “It’s nice that you brought plants to the live performance! Even the plants are happy to hear beautiful music.” It was a moment that made me realize how much our perspective can change everything.

Greek Day – June 25

It is an event celebrating Greek culture and sharing it with others, has been held since 1974. With numerous Greek food stalls lining Broadway for about 1 kilometer, as well as live music performances, it attracts over 100,000 visitors annually. You found enjoyment in taking photos with Greek beauties, exploring the booths selling Greek items, and browsing through the bustling vintage clothing section. Due to the long queues at every food stall, you opted to have dinner at a Greek restaurant called “SIMPATICO,” which turned out to be a delightful experience, with its charming exterior, playful server, and delicious food.
