私の尊敬する女性の1人カリーナがご自宅でジャズライブを催されるということでご招待していただき先日行ってきました。

演奏された方のお名前はアラン・マセンさん。

彼はバンクーバーを拠点に活動するピアニスト、トランペッター、作曲家、編曲家です。ブリティッシュコロンビア大学音楽学校でジャズピアノとトランペットの講師を務め、バンクーバーシンフォニースクールオブミュージックでもジャズ史の講義やジャズピアノとトランペットの指導をしています。また、バンクーバーコミュニティカレッジ音楽学校でも30年以上にわたりトランペット、ジャズ史、ジャズピアノ、ジャズアンサンブルの教鞭を執ってきました。

彼自身のビッグバンド、ノネット、セプテット、トリオも率いており、ジャズの伝説であるクラーク・テリーやバド・シャンクのために編曲も手がけています。

こんなに素晴らしい経歴をお持ちの方の美しい演奏を生で、しかも会場ではなくカリーナのご自宅で体感できることへの有り難みで胸が熱くなりました。

音楽も言葉の壁を越える力を持ち、人間が創った素晴らしい文化ひとつだと思います。

キッチンとリビングルーム。どの角度から写真を撮っても絵になる空間です。ジャズライブの会場にぴったりの雰囲気でした。

こちらは玄関を開けるとすぐ目に入る私の大好きな一角。色使いが洗練されていて何度お邪魔しても見入ってしまいます。パートナーのジョセフは本棚にある本たちに興味津々でした。ここにはカリーナがジンバブエに住んでいた頃に購入されたアートたちも並んでいます。

ご自宅にお邪魔するたびに見惚れてしまうカリーナのヴィンテージバッグコレクション。彼女と出会ったヴィンテージイベントBizarre Bazaarで（彼女との出会いとイベントの詳細は過去記事から→https://ayakanoikigaidou.com/カリーナとの出会いと彼女のアート/ ）バッグばかりを見ている私に「Are you a purse person？」とカリーナが聞いたことを覚えています。私は「Yes,I am !!!」と強く答え、その時にお互いにヴィンテージバッグが大好きと言う共通点があることが分かりすごく嬉しかったです。

美しい時間と経験を共有する空間を企画するカリーナの人柄

今回改めて感じたのは、美しい時間や経験を他人と共有しようという彼女の素敵な人柄です。彼女は料理やデザート、飲み物を全てご自身で準備され、来客人数分の椅子を用意するなどジャズライブの全てをオーガナイズされていました。

自分が魅力的だと思ったものや素晴らしい経験を人とシェアする機会を作ることに力を注ぐことはとても意味深いことだと思います。それが私にとってはこのブログを書くことなのかもしれません。

Live jazz performance at Kaarina’s home

I attended a jazz live performance at Kaarina’s home, one of the women I admire, after receiving an invitation. (For details about my encounter with Kaarina and information about her, please refer to this past article: カリーナとの出会いと彼女のアートとビザーバザー)

The performer’s name was Alan Mason.

He is a pianist, trumpeter, composer, and arranger based in Vancouver. He serves as a jazz piano and trumpet instructor at the University of British Columbia School of Music and also teaches jazz history, jazz piano, and trumpet at the Vancouver Symphony School of Music. Furthermore, he has been teaching trumpet, jazz history, jazz piano, and jazz ensemble at Vancouver Community College School of Music for over 30 years.

He leads his own big band, nonet, septet, and trio, and has also arranged music for jazz legends such as Clark Terry and Bud Shank.

I was deeply moved and grateful to be able to experience his beautiful performance live at Karina’s home, rather than at a concert venue. Music has the power to transcend language barriers, and it is one of the wonderful things created by humans.

A kitchen and a living room. No matter which angle you took a photo from, it was a picturesque space perfectly suited for a jazz live performance.

One of my favorite corners immediately caught my eye as soon as I entered the front door. The color scheme is sophisticated, and no matter how many times I visit, I can’t help but be captivated by it. Joseph, my partner, was deeply interested in the books on the bookshelf. There are also artworks that Kaarina purchased when she lived in Zimbabwe displayed here.

Her vintage bag collection, which I always find mesmerizing whenever I visit her. I remember Kaarina asking me, while I was engrossed in looking at the bags at the vintage event Bizarre Bazaar where I met her (カリーナとの出会いと彼女のアートとビザーバザー), “Are you a purse person?” I replied, “Yes, I am!!!” with a strong affirmation, and at that moment, I was extremely happy to discover that we both shared a love for vintage bags.

Kaarina’s personality in creating spaces to share beautiful moments and experiences

What I felt again this time was her wonderful personality of wanting to share beautiful moments and experiences with others. She personally prepared the food, desserts, and drinks, and organized everything for the jazz live performance, including providing chairs for all the guests.

Making an effort to create opportunities to share things that one finds attractive or wonderful experiences with others is a deeply meaningful act. Perhaps, for me, that is what writing this blog is all about.

The wonderful time that Kaarina shared with me and the encounter with her were made possible because I made the decision to come to Vancouver.
