一期一会 in バンクーバー②

今日は私が目標とする女性の一人、素敵なカナダ人女性カリーナとの有り難いご縁について書きます。彼女はビザーバザーというバンクーバーで年に２回開催されているヴィンテージの服や小物を取り扱うベンダー達が参加して販売する大きなイベントのオーガナイザーでありながら、アーティストでもあります。

私がカナダに来た最初の3ヶ月はESLの生徒で、その期間は働いてはいけないというルールがあります。34歳の私にとって学校のみ生活はとても退屈で、早くカナダの本当の社会に参加したい。現地でしっかりと生活をしている人と出会いたいという気持ちが常にあり、いくつかのボランティアに積極的に参加していました。その中のひとつのボランティアがビザーバザーのスタッフで、去年の春に参加したのが彼女との初めて出会いです。

その時は少しお話をしただけでしたがメールアドレスをお互い知っていたので自然と連絡を取り合うようになり、同年の秋にもボランティアスタッフとして参加しました。その後もカリーナがご自宅に何度か招待してくださり、定期的にお会いするようになりました。

カリーナのご自宅とっても素敵なんです！いつも美味しいお茶やお食事を準備してくださいます。

初めて彼女のご自宅にお邪魔した時に、彼女がアーティストであることを初めて知りました。彼女のアートはヴィンテージの着物や生地、ブローチから使った美しいバック達。あまりの素晴らしさに開いた口が塞がらなかったことを覚えています。

さらに最近は千代紙と廃棄される段ボールを使ってこれらの美しい箱も作っています。廃棄される予定のものをこんな素晴らしいアートに変えてしまう彼女のスキルとアイディアに圧巻です。

彼女も全く同じことが当てはまります。私は彼女の人柄や価値観、美的センスが大好きです。そして生き方を尊敬しています。ビザーバザーのオーガナイザーとしてのお仕事にご自身の時間を沢山費やしているにも関わらず、全てボランティアなんです。私も将来、時間的にも精神的にも金銭的にもそんな生き方が出来るようになりたいです。

そして彼女とのご縁には続きがあって、今年の春はボランティアスタッフではなく出店者として参加させていただきました。ジョセフとVVR(ヴィンテージの服と小物を販売する私たちのオンラインビジネスの名前）を始めた時にはもちろん彼女と出会った当初はこのご縁がこんな風に繋がるなんて想像もしていなかったです。直接販売できる機会はとても有り難かったです。お陰様で想像していたより良い売り上げ結果も出ました。今年の秋も参加予定です。

Encounter with Kaarina ,Her Art and Bizarre Bazaar

Once in a Lifetime in Vancouver, Part 2

Today, I would like to write about the wonderful connection I have with Kaarina, a lovely Canadian woman who is one of the women I admire. She is not only the organizer of a major event called “Bizarre Bazzar” in Vancouver, where vendors sell vintage clothing and accessories twice a year, but also an artist.

During my first three months in Canada, I was an ESL student, and during that period, there was a rule that I couldn’t work. As a 34-year-old, living only as a student was very boring for me, and I wanted to participate in the real Canadian society as soon as possible. I always felt the desire to meet people who were living a stable life locally and actively participated in several volunteer activities. One of the volunteer activities was being a staff member at Bizarre Bazaar, and that’s where I first met Kaarina in the spring of last year.

At that time, we only had a brief conversation, but since we knew each other’s email addresses, we naturally started to communicate with each other, and I participated as a volunteer staff member again in the fall of the same year. After that, Kaarina kindly invited me to her home several times, and we started to meet regularly.

As an artist, Kaarina

It was during my first visit to her home that I knew that she is an artist. Her art consists of beautiful bags made from vintage kimonos, fabrics, and brooches. I remember being speechless at their incredible beauty.

Recently, she has been making these beautiful boxes using washi paper and discarded cardboard. It’s impressive to see how she turns things that are destined to be discarded into such wonderful art with her skills and ideas.

Conversations with her are truly pleasant, and each time we meet, we have lots of news to share. The same applies to my conversations with Kaarina. I love her personality, values, and aesthetic sense, and I truly respect her way of life. Despite dedicating a lot of her time to her work as the organizer of Bazaar, she does it all as a volunteer. I also aspire to live a life where I can dedicate my time, energy, and finances to such endeavors in the future.

Furthermore, the connection with her continued, and this spring, I had the opportunity to participate as a vendor instead of a volunteer staff member. When Joseph and I started our online business called VVR (Van Vintage Retail) together, I certainly didn’t imagine that this connection would lead to such an opportunity. It was truly grateful to have the chance to sell our products directly. Thanks to that, we achieved better sales results than we had imagined. We are planning to participate again in the fall of this year.
