ロバート・デイヴィッドソン展覧会 最終日 at バンクーバー美術館

そもそもノースウェストコーストアートって？正直日本だとそんなには馴染みがないですよね。私がバンクーバー空港に到着した日にそこに立ちはだかっていたのは大きなトーテムポールでした。トーテムポールも彼らの代表的なアートのひとつです。

彼らは生活の中に様々な神話や、伝説、象徴の意味を表す様々な記号やシンボルを持っていて、それらは天体、自然現象、動物のデザインを幾何学的に表現したものになります。すべての物や人には魂が宿っていると信じられています。

パートナーのジョセフはノースウェストコーストアーティストとして最も有名なロバート・デイヴィットソンの大ファンなので、彼の提案でバンクーバー美術館で開催されていた展覧会に行ってきました。

ロバート・デイヴィットソンについて

1946年11月4日生まれ。カナダ先住民の種族の一つであるハイダ族のアーティスト。トーテムポールやマスクの彫刻家、プリントメーカー、画家、そしてジュエリー制作もしています。この展覧会は彼の絵画とプリントのみでしたが十分な見応えでした。一人でこれらの全てスキルを極めているなんて驚愕です。

1874年にカナダ政府が始めた同化政策により、先住民の子供達は独自の言語のコミュニケーションを禁止されキリスト教の信仰を強要されました。もちろん先住民へのアート活動も禁止されました。「先住民族の文化や信仰は劣っていて不適切」という現代至上主義からもとにあったこと言われています。しかし1990年代から間違った方針であると教会や政府が認め始め、ついに2008年に当時の首相が正式に謝罪しました。

そんな歴史的背景の中でロバートは1969年に約90年ぶりの初のトーテムポールを彫り、立ち上げました。カナダ先住民の象徴のような存在。数々の賞を受賞されているアートの素晴らしさはもちろんですが、歴史的にもカナダにとって彼がいかに意味深いアーティストか理解できます。

そしてなんとこの日は展覧会最終日だったのでご本人がいらっしゃって歓喜のダンスと歌、音楽を披露してくださいました。ハイダ語の歌詞は全く理解できなかったにも関わらず、彼らの感情のこもったパフォーマンスに鳥肌が立ち、自然と涙が流れました。

RAVEN　渡り烏　ワタリガラス

世界に光をもたらした創造主。ファーストネーションズ神話における最も重要な文化的なヒーロー（英雄）で、彼らは何事をも可能にしてしまう、ずる賢さを兼ね備えた手品師であり、そのマジックを使い天地創造に関係したと云われています。太陽・月・星を空に、魚を海へ、鮭を川へ、食べ物を陸へ導いたと言われています。レイブンはいたずら好きで、時に自分の姿を変えて人々の前に姿を現します。

THUNDERBIRD　雷鳥　サンダーバード

高貴で全能なる空と超自然界の支配者であり、神秘的、強いスピリット、リーダーシップの象徴です。サンダーバードはインディアンの神話で雷鳴を招き、その目からは稲妻が走ると言われる伝説上の巨鳥であります。

EAGLE　鷲　ワシ

サンダーバードに次ぐ超自然界のスピリットを持つと言われ、偉大な強さ・名声・リーダーシップ・将来の可能性の象徴です。イーグルはとても知力に富み、名高く、他人から尊敬され、リーダーシップに富んでいます。イーグルはこれらの力を使って世界（空）を自由に高く飛びまわります。

EAGLE FEATHER　イーグルの羽根

歓迎と友情・平和の象徴。イーグルフェザーは今でもインディアンの儀式の時にゲストの前に撒かれたり、儀式の中でマスクや頭飾りにも使用されました。羽根を手にしている時は、真実を語り、自分に正直でなればいけないとされています。

SUN　太陽　タイヨウ

発展・発達・成長・エネルギー・生命力・治癒能力・昼の地球を見守る者の象徴です。太陽はすべての者の供給者であり、地球や人々にエネルギーまたは生命を与えています。神話では人間の祖先は太陽から変化したと言われています。

MOON　月　ツキ

地球を見守る者・平静や落ち着きの象徴。月はすべての物の守護者であり、特に夜の闇を守るプロテクターです。月は遠くからいつも我々人間を見守り、幸福へと導くと信じられています。

KILLER WHALE　鯱　シャチ

長寿・直感・調和・旅行者・守護者・海の支配者・良い事の象徴・コミュニケーションの象徴です。部族の長が死ぬとキラーホエールに生まれ変わるという伝説から海の守護者でありスピリットキーパーであると言われます。シャチは海の中で人間とよく似た複雑な社会を作り暮らしています。特に全てのGood（良い事）の象徴でもあります。

SALMON　鮭　サケ

信頼・繁栄・成功・頼みの綱・再生・供給者・生命を与える者の象徴です。特に通常はペアで彫刻されることが多く、幸運の象徴になっています。

HUMMINGBIRD　蜂鳥　ハチドリ

愛・美しさ・知性・幸運・幸せのメッセンジャーです。誰かが大きな悲しみや苦痛の時期にこの鳥を見ると癒しのヒーリングを受けて悲しみが癒されると言われています。

今日、多くの女性からの人気を得ている理由は、ハミングバードが幸せのメッセンジャーと呼ばれ、愛と美の重要なシンボルであるからです。

BEAR　熊　クマ

強さや体力・思慮深さ・親類の長老・自然界の薬剤師・良き友達クマは肉体的、精神的、強さの象徴です。熊は「年上の親族の男」と呼ばれ、熊が殺された時には長老の家に運ばれ、高い最高位のゲストとして扱われました。

BEAVER　ビーバー

創造的・独創的・芸術家・建設者・固い決意・活動や防御の象徴です。動物界の大工と呼ばれ、特に資源や想像力が豊かで勤勉。決心の固さでも知られています。ビーバーは、装飾品や日用品の多くのアイテムの中にしばしば見ることができます。ハイダ族の伝説の中では、ビーバーがレイヴンからサーモンを取り返し、人間にサーモンを与えたと伝えられています。

FROG　蛙　カエル

伝達者・安定・純真・無邪気・春・新たな生活・家族の協調・精神的な平和と幸福の象徴です。カエルは地上と水中の両方を旅しながら生活していて地上と水中の両方の生き物の仲裁人を務めていると言われています。また、カエルは春の象徴でもあり、変化していくこと、新しい人生のシンボルでもあります。

SISIUTL 双頭の海蛇シシトル

海に住む双頭の海蛇で、超自然界の守り神・戦士・治癒能力の象徴。超自然的なパワーを持つシシトルは姿を自在に変える事も出来て、とても強いヒーリングパワーを持ち、ファーストネーションズの守り神であると言われています。

BUTTERFLY　蝶　バタフライ

変化、喜び、色の象徴。英雄レイブンのパートナーで、レイブンを食べ物や宝石や幸運のありかに導いたと言われています。バタフライは自由になったあと、必ずあなたの願い事を部族の神まで届けてくれる幸運の蝶だと伝えられています。

DRAGON FLY　蜻蛉　トンボ

生活の変化の象徴。ドラゴンフライは自由で活動的でいろんな面を持っています。人々は昔、ドラゴンフライが現れると、力強さや物事の移り変わりの時を表していると信じていました。

WOLF　狼　オオカミ

開拓者・知能・リーダーシップ・親近感・忠誠心・忍耐力・家族愛の象徴です。狼は開拓者、新しい考えの先駆者で、そのために狼の社会はとても個人主義が強く、忍耐力に富んでいます。つがいは一生連れ添い、家族の絆は彼らにとって絶対です。

DOGFISH　鮫　サメ

ドッグフィッシュは、粘り強さ・持続性・強さ・体力・生まれながらのリーダーの象徴です。

HALIBUT　大鮃　オヒョウ

オヒョウは、生命を守る者・強さ・体力・安定の象徴です。

HERON　鷺　サギ

サギは、忍耐・優雅・寛大の象徴です。

Final day of the Robert Davidson Exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery

What is Northwest Coast Art to begin with? Honestly, it’s not something that’s very familiar in Japan. On the day I arrived at Vancouver airport, I was greeted by a large totem pole. Totem poles are one of their representative forms of art.

They incorporate various myths, legends, and symbols into their daily lives, expressing them geometrically through designs inspired by celestial bodies, natural phenomena, and animals. It is believed that everything and everyone possesses a soul.

My partner Joseph, being a big fan of the most renowned Northwest Coast artist, Robert Davidson, suggested that we visit the exhibition held at the Vancouver Art Gallery, and that’s exactly what we did.

About Robert Davidson

Robert Davidson was born on November 4, 1946, and is an artist from the Haida Nation, one of the indigenous tribes in Canada. He is known for his work as a carver of totem poles and masks, a printmaker, painter, and jewelry maker. Although this particular exhibition focused on his paintings and prints, it provided a captivating experience. It is truly astonishing that he has mastered all these skills on his own.

The assimilation policies initiated by the Canadian government in 1874 prohibited Indigenous children from practicing their own language and forced them into adopting the Christian faith. Naturally, artistic activities among Indigenous peoples were also banned, influenced by the contemporary supremacist notion that Indigenous cultures and beliefs were inferior and inappropriate. However, in the 1990s, the Church and the government began to acknowledge the wrongfulness of these policies, and in 2008, the then Prime Minister formally apologized.

Against this historical backdrop, Robert carved and raised the first totem pole in nearly 90 years in 1969, becoming a symbolic figure for Canadian Indigenous people. The brilliance of his art, recognized by numerous awards, is remarkable, but understanding his significance in Canadian history adds another layer to his identity as an artist.

And, surprisingly, it was the final day of the exhibition, so Robert Davidson himself was present and performed a joyful dance, song, and music. Despite not understanding the Haida language lyrics, their emotionally charged performance gave me goosebumps, and tears welled up naturally.

While the widespread availability of online content, including images, videos, and music, is wonderful, the importance of experiencing things firsthand is truly significant. This was strongly emphasized for me during this exhibition.

On a side note, after viewing the exhibition, I participated in a workshop on the 5th floor of the Vancouver Art Gallery. It was a lot of fun.

The meaning of symbols used in Northwest Coast art

RAVEN

The creator who brought light to the world. The most important cultural hero in First Nations mythology, Raven is a trickster with the ability to make anything possible. It is said that Raven used its magic in the creation of the heavens and earth, guiding the sun, moon, stars to the sky, fish to the sea, and salmon to the rivers. Raven is mischievous, sometimes appearing in different forms to interact with people.

THUNDERBIRD

A noble and omnipotent ruler of the sky and the supernatural, symbolizing mystery, strong spirit, and leadership. Thunderbird is a legendary giant bird in Indigenous mythology that brings thunder, and lightning is said to flash from its eyes.

EAGLE

Considered to possess a spirit from the supernatural realm, the Eagle is a symbol of great strength, fame, leadership, and future possibilities, second only to the Thunderbird. The Eagle is highly intelligent, renowned, respected by others, and carries a leadership quality. It soars freely in the world (sky) using these powers.

EAGLE FEATHER

A symbol of welcome, friendship, and peace. Eagle feathers are still scattered in front of guests during Indigenous ceremonies, and they have been used in masks and headdresses during rituals. Holding an eagle feather signifies the importance of speaking the truth and being honest with oneself.

SUN

Symbolizing development, growth, energy, life force, healing abilities, and the guardian of the Earth during the day. The sun is the provider for all beings, giving energy or life to the Earth and its inhabitants. In mythology, it is said that human ancestors transformed from the sun.

MOON

Guardian of the Earth, symbolizing serenity and calmness. The moon is considered the protector of all things, particularly safeguarding the darkness of the night. It is believed that the moon watches over humans from afar, guiding them towards happiness.

SALMON

Symbolizing trust, prosperity, success, a lifeline, regeneration, provider, and giver of life. Often carved in pairs, salmon are seen as symbols of good luck.
