フローリストの仕事を選んだ３つの理由/Three reasons why I chose to work as a florist

日本に住んでいた頃、留学への決意を固めたと同時にバンクーバーのフローリストで絶対働くということも決めていました。

その理由は３つあります。

①芸術的な技術は言葉の壁を越える力があるから

東京のアパレル企業で正社員として働きながら、お花屋さんで週１回副業としてアルバイトをしていたので少なからずスキルがありました。そのため英語力が不足していてもカバー出来るはず！と思ったからです。ただいざ働いてみると自分の知識や技術はまだまだで、日々修行中です。私の働くフローリストはクラシックなラウンド型ではないモダンなスタイル。今日の作ったブーケとアレンジメントです。

②英語を使いながら自分の好きな事、身に付けたいスキルを学びたいから

いくら英語力をつけるためとはいえど、興味のないことはしたくない！という気持ちがありました。やったとしても本当に続かないわかりやすい性格なのを34年間生きてきて十分わかっています。全く頭に入らないし集中出来ない。せっかくの貴重な時間を興味のないことに費やすのがもったいなく感じ、本当に耐えられないんです。

③母の言葉

日本に住む母がフランスの旅の番組を見ていてたまたま耳にした言葉を教えてくれました。

「花束は素晴らしい。愛と幸せのかたまり。多種多様の植物たちがそれぞれを認め合い、素晴らしいものを作りあげている。人々もそうならなくてはいけない。」

その愛の束を作っているあなたたちは素晴らしい！と言ってくれました。花束って本当に人を幸せにする力があると思います。いつも母の言葉を思い出してやりがいを感じながら働いています。

Three reasons why I chose to work as a florist

The artistic skills transcend language barriers

While working as a full-time employee at an apparel company in Tokyo, I also had a part-time job at a flower shop once a week. This allowed me to acquire some skills in floral design. I believed that even with limited English proficiency, I could make up for it with my floral expertise. However, once I started working, I realized that there is still much to learn and improve upon, and I am constantly honing my skills. The florist I work for specializes in a modern styles, rather than the traditional round bouquets. Here are some bouquets and arrangements I made today:

• I also enjoy creating arrangements using only white and green flowers.

I wanted to learn and develop skills in something I love while using English

Even though improving my English skills was a priority, I didn’t want to engage in something that didn’t interest me. I know myself well enough after living for 34 years that I won’t be able to sustain my focus and commitment if I’m not genuinely interested. I feel that it would be a waste to spend valuable time on something I’m not passionate about. Therefore, I decided to pursue a career as a florist, which allows me to use English while engaging in something I love. This profession suits my personality as I can concentrate better on things that genuinely interest me.

My mother’s words

While watching a travel program in France, my mother, who lives in Japan, heard a phrase that stuck with her and she shared it with me. It went something like this: “Flower bouquets are wonderful. They represent love and happiness, as diverse plants come together to create something beautiful. People should strive to be like that too.” My mother said to me, “You, who create those bundles of love, are amazing!” I truly believe that flower bouquets have the power to bring happiness to people. I always keep my mother’s words in mind, and they give me a sense of fulfillment while working as a florist.

As a florist in Vancouver, Mother’s Day is one of the busiest days, just like in Japan.
