　10月5日はパートナージョセフのお誕生日でした。

　そこで私が計画したのは彼が大好きなアーティストであるスーザン・ポイントのアートを巡るバンクーバーツアーです！

　私がスーザンのアートと場所の詳細を調べて、ジョセフを各所に効率よく連れていくツアーガイドになったわけです。アートを見つけるのに時間がかかったり、時間配分を間違えてジョセフを走らせたりするぐだぐだなツアーガイドでした。笑

スーザン・ポイントとは？

　日本人の方はそもそも「スーザン・ポイント」を知らない方も多いのではないでしょうか？私もジョセフと出会うまでは知らなかったです。

　簡単に説明をすると、1952年4月5日生まれ。彼女のアートスキルは全てが独学です。

　スーザン・ポイントは広く認知された初めての女性沿岸セイリッシュ族のアーティストの一人であり、北西海岸のアーティストたちの中で影響力のある人物です。

　彼女の作品は伝統的な沿岸セイリッシュ族のアート制作に影響を受けています。それと同時にこれらの伝統的な方法を現代の表現形式に変化させています。

沿岸セイリッシュ族とは？

　コースト・セイリッシュ（Coast Salish）は、北アメリカの太平洋岸北西部に居住している先住民族の一つです。彼らは主にカナダのブリティッシュコロンビア州とアメリカのワシントン州に住んでいます。

　彼らの文化は豊かで、美術、彫刻、物語、音楽、ダンス、そして宗教的な伝統など、多岐にわたる芸術的要素を含んでいます。彼らのアート作品は特に彫刻や織物に特徴があり、象徴的な図案やモチーフを用いています。コースト・セイリッシュの文化は、その豊かな芸術遺産と精巧な工芸品で知られています。

太平洋北西部には、様々な先住民族が存在しそれぞれが独自の文化、言語、伝統を持っています。

バンクーバーの街で出会ったスーザンの４つの作品たち

1.Fusion

2013年制作

場所：Granville at 70th W 70th Ave and Cornish st

　バンクーバーの最も古い住宅地の1つであるMarpoleの中心にあります。周りは住宅街で突然Fusionは現れます。またこのエリアは伝統的なマスキーム族の領土に位置しています。

　彼らにとって最も神聖な場所の1つであるGreat Fraser Middenは、この場所のすぐ南に位置しています。

　この作品はこの豊かな文化史、沿岸セリッシュ族の歴史、そしてこの地域の住民に隣人であるマスキームを紹介するために、スーザンによって考案されました。

　14フィートの高さのウォータージェットで切断されたアルミニウム製のこの彫刻は、銅と銀の塗装が施されていて、沿岸セリッシュ族のデザインで、サケと川の草を描いています。これは沿岸セリッシュ族、特にマスキームを代表するものであり、かつて近くのフレーザー川に豊富に存在していたサケを表しています。

※セイリッシュとマスキームの違い

　セイリッシュとは、同じ言語系を共有する先住民族の集団を指します。マスキームは特定のファーストネーションズバンドで、多くのセイリッシュ語を話す民族たちの一つです。

2. Salish Gifts

2016年制作

場所：Marine Gateway 447-497 sw Marine Dr

　2013年のはじめに、スーザンは、公共美術管理のカレン・ミルズという長年の知人から、マリン・ゲートウェイでの新しい公共美術の企画を知らされます。これはフレーザー川に近い複合施設で、マリン・ドライブ駅に隣接しており、ここ数十年間の彼女の創作物の中で最もアクセスしやすい公共美術作品の1つです。

　この4つのオブジェは、この地域における古代セリッシュ族の存在を称えるシンボルとなっています。

　高さは約3フィートで素材はコンクリートとブロンズです。

　人々はこれをテーブルのように使ってコーヒー飲んだり、おしゃべりを楽しみます。私が行った時は子供が上に乗ったりしていました。笑

　アートが街に自然と馴染んでいて、そこに人々が集まり無意識に使っている姿がなんとも微笑ましかったです。

3.Moon Journey

2009年制作

場所：Vancouver Convention Centre 1055 Canada PI

　これは4匹のクーカンズ（クジラ）が満月の周りを泳いでいる姿を表しています。また背びれはカラスの頭とくちばしの形をしています。

　また「4」という数は先住民族にとって重要な意味を持っています。例えば東西南北、春夏秋冬、そして地球、風、火、水といった4つの要素です。

　この作品は、Vancouver Convention Centreを地球の四方から人々を集める場所として表しています。流れるような曲線と美しい色の石の全体像を見るために、この建物の最上階から眺めることをおすすめします。尾部とヒレの黒い石は際立ち、月の白い石や各尾部にあるセリッシュ様式の楔形もよく見え、尾部とヒレの間には、斑模様の灰色の石で示された海と空があることがわかります。

　彼女はセリッシュのアーティストにとって重要なシンボルであるシャチとカラスなど、セリッシュの文化と信念をこの作品を通して人々に紹介しました。

4.Memory

場所：Various, Vancouver

　スーザンと娘のケリーが2004年にデザインしたこちらのマンホールカバーは彼女の代表作の一つです。

　バンクーバー市内のビジネス街の中心から緑豊かな住宅地区まで、数百の通りで見ることができます。私がこの日に見つけたのは観光地として有名なガスタウンの一角でした。

　スーザンとケリーは、彼らのインスピレーションについて次のように説明しています。

　自然に関連する最初の思い出を考えたとき、カエルと蝶の変態または生命サイクルという2つのことがすぐに思い浮かびました。

雨水排水のイメージはカエルの変態を描いています.。中央に卵があり、それがオタマジャクシになり、それからカエルに変わっていきます。

　生命の本質である水を使って、これらのデザインは「完全な生命の爆発」の感覚を与えることを意図しており、マンホールカバーの全表面を使用して、すべての生命は水から生じることを示しています。沿岸セリッシュ族の先住民の教えを通して、これらのデザインの円形型は「生命の輪」を表し、すべての生命がいかなる形であれ繋がっているという事実を表しています。これらのイメージは、どの方向から見ても認識できるように設計されています。

　セイリッシュ族の三日月、くさび、およびU形によって定義された4つの卵、4つのオタマジャクシ、4つのカエルの美しい配置は、セリッシュ文化における2つの重要なテーマ「4」と「カエル」そして環境管理の重要性を思い出させてくれます。

スーザンは「私たちはマンホールカバーを人々が見つけることで、喜びの瞬間を提供出来ることを願っています」と語っています。

　このアートとインフラストラクチャーの結び付けは、ジム・グリーン議員がアーティストにカバーデザインの提出を依頼するため、2004年春のコンペティション「アート・アンダーフット」を開催を提案したことが始まりです。600人以上のプロやアマチュアのアーティストやデザイナーがアイデアを提出しました。

　スーザンとケリーは、変身をテーマとした2つのデザインを提案。衛生下水のマンホールカバーには蝶のデザイン、雨水排水のカバーにはこのカエルのデザインを使用しました。

　バンクーバー美術館の首席キュレーターであるダイナ・オーガイティス、作家、アーティスト、デザイナーであるダグラス・クプランド、アーティストのソニー・アッス、そしてデイビッド・スズキ財団のエグゼクティブディレクターであるジム・フルトンから構成される専門家たちが受賞者を選出しました。

　そしてスーザンとケリーのカエルのデザインが選ばれたわけです！

RAVEN　渡り烏　ワタリガラス

世界に光をもたらした創造主。ファーストネーションズ神話における最も重要な文化的なヒーロー（英雄）で、彼らは何事をも可能にしてしまう、ずる賢さを兼ね備えた手品師であり、そのマジックを使い天地創造に関係したと云われています。太陽・月・星を空に、魚を海へ、鮭を川へ、食べ物を陸へ導いたと言われています。レイブンはいたずら好きで、時に自分の姿を変えて人々の前に姿を現します。

THUNDERBIRD　雷鳥　サンダーバード

EAGLE　鷲　ワシ

サンダーバードに次ぐ超自然界のスピリットを持つと言われ、偉大な強さ・名声・リーダーシップ・将来の可能性の象徴です。イーグルはとても知力に富み、名高く、他人から尊敬され、リーダーシップに富んでいます。イーグルはこれらの力を使って世界（空）を自由に高く飛びまわります。

EAGLE FEATHER　イーグルの羽根

歓迎と友情・平和の象徴。イーグルフェザーは今でもインディアンの儀式の時にゲストの前に撒かれたり、儀式の中でマスクや頭飾りにも使用されました。羽根を手にしている時は、真実を語り、自分に正直でなればいけないとされています。

SUN　太陽　タイヨウ

発展・発達・成長・エネルギー・生命力・治癒能力・昼の地球を見守る者の象徴です。太陽はすべての者の供給者であり、地球や人々にエネルギーまたは生命を与えています。神話では人間の祖先は太陽から変化したと言われています。

MOON　月　ツキ

地球を見守る者・平静や落ち着きの象徴。月はすべての物の守護者であり、特に夜の闇を守るプロテクターです。月は遠くからいつも我々人間を見守り、幸福へと導くと信じられています。

KILLER WHALE　鯱　シャチ

長寿・直感・調和・旅行者・守護者・海の支配者・良い事の象徴・コミュニケーションの象徴です。部族の長が死ぬとキラーホエールに生まれ変わるという伝説から海の守護者でありスピリットキーパーであると言われます。シャチは海の中で人間とよく似た複雑な社会を作り暮らしています。特に全てのGood（良い事）の象徴でもあります。

SALMON　鮭　サケ

信頼・繁栄・成功・頼みの綱・再生・供給者・生命を与える者の象徴です。特に通常はペアで彫刻されることが多く、幸運の象徴になっています。

HUMMINGBIRD　蜂鳥　ハチドリ

愛・美しさ・知性・幸運・幸せのメッセンジャーです。誰かが大きな悲しみや苦痛の時期にこの鳥を見ると癒しのヒーリングを受けて悲しみが癒されると言われています。

今日、多くの女性からの人気を得ている理由は、ハミングバードが幸せのメッセンジャーと呼ばれ、愛と美の重要なシンボルであるからです。

BEAR　熊　クマ

強さや体力・思慮深さ・親類の長老・自然界の薬剤師・良き友達クマは肉体的、精神的、強さの象徴です。熊は「年上の親族の男」と呼ばれ、熊が殺された時には長老の家に運ばれ、高い最高位のゲストとして扱われました。

BEAVER　ビーバー

創造的・独創的・芸術家・建設者・固い決意・活動や防御の象徴です。動物界の大工と呼ばれ、特に資源や想像力が豊かで勤勉。決心の固さでも知られています。ビーバーは、装飾品や日用品の多くのアイテムの中にしばしば見ることができます。ハイダ族の伝説の中では、ビーバーがレイヴンからサーモンを取り返し、人間にサーモンを与えたと伝えられています。

FROG　蛙　カエル

伝達者・安定・純真・無邪気・春・新たな生活・家族の協調・精神的な平和と幸福の象徴です。カエルは地上と水中の両方を旅しながら生活していて地上と水中の両方の生き物の仲裁人を務めていると言われています。また、カエルは春の象徴でもあり、変化していくこと、新しい人生のシンボルでもあります。

SISIUTL 双頭の海蛇シシトル

海に住む双頭の海蛇で、超自然界の守り神・戦士・治癒能力の象徴。超自然的なパワーを持つシシトルは姿を自在に変える事も出来て、とても強いヒーリングパワーを持ち、ファーストネーションズの守り神であると言われています。

BUTTERFLY　蝶　バタフライ

変化、喜び、色の象徴。英雄レイブンのパートナーで、レイブンを食べ物や宝石や幸運のありかに導いたと言われています。バタフライは自由になったあと、必ずあなたの願い事を部族の神まで届けてくれる幸運の蝶だと伝えられています。

DRAGON FLY　蜻蛉　トンボ

生活の変化の象徴。ドラゴンフライは自由で活動的でいろんな面を持っています。人々は昔、ドラゴンフライが現れると、力強さや物事の移り変わりの時を表していると信じていました。

WOLF　狼　オオカミ

開拓者・知能・リーダーシップ・親近感・忠誠心・忍耐力・家族愛の象徴です。狼は開拓者、新しい考えの先駆者で、そのために狼の社会はとても個人主義が強く、忍耐力に富んでいます。つがいは一生連れ添い、家族の絆は彼らにとって絶対です。

DOGFISH　鮫　サメ

粘り強さ・持続性・強さ・体力・生まれながらのリーダーの象徴です。

Seeking Susan Point’s Art Hidden in the Streets of Vancouver

October 5th was my partner Joseph’s birthday.

So, what I planned was a Vancouver tour revolving around the art of Susan Point, his favorite artist!

I did the research on Susan’s art and locations, and became a tour guide taking Joseph efficiently to various places. It was a bit of a bumbling tour guide, sometimes taking too long to find the art or mismanaging the time and making Joseph rush. haha

Who is Susan Point?

Many Japanese people may not be familiar with “Susan Point” to begin with, just like I was before I met Joseph.

To put it simply, She was born on April 5, 1952. All of her art skills are self-taught.

Susan Point is one of the first widely recognized female Coast Salish artists and a prominent figure among Northwest Coast artists. Her works are influenced by traditional Coast Salish art-making while also transforming these traditional methods into contemporary forms of expression.

Who are the Coast Salish People?

The Coast Salish are one of the Indigenous peoples residing in the Pacific Northwest of North America. They primarily inhabit the British Columbia province of Canada and the state of Washington in the United States.

Their culture is rich and encompasses various artistic elements such as art, sculpture, storytelling, music, dance, and religious traditions. Their artwork notably features carvings and weavings, incorporating symbolic patterns and motifs. Coast Salish culture is known for its rich artistic heritage and intricate craftsmanship.

The Pacific Northwest is home to a variety of Indigenous peoples, each with their own distinct cultures, languages, and traditions. Some of the major Indigenous groups include:

• Coast Salish
• Haida
• Tlingit
• Nuu-chah-nulth
• Makah
• Kwakwakaʼwakw
• Nuxalk
• Squamish
• Cowichan

The four works of Susan encountered in the streets of Vancouver

1.Fusion

Year of creation: 2013

Location: Granville at 70th W 70th Ave and Cornish St.

It is located in the heart of Marpole, one of Vancouver’s oldest residential neighborhoods. Fusion suddenly appears amidst the surrounding residential area. Additionally, this area is situated on the traditional territory of the Musqueam people.

One of their most sacred sites, the Great Fraser Midden, is located just south of this site. This work was conceived by Susan to introduce the Musqueam people, who are neighbors to the residents of this area, and to acknowledge the rich cultural history and the history of the Coast Salish people.

This 14-foot high water-jet cut aluminum sculpture, powder-coated in copper and silver paint, depicts salmon and river grass in a contemporary Coast Salish design. It represents the Coast Salish people, particularly the Musqueam people, and the salmon, which were once abundant in the nearby Fraser River.

※The differences between Salish and Musqueam are as follows

Salish refers to a group of Indigenous peoples who share the same language family. Musqueam is a specific First Nations band, which is one of the many Salish-speaking nations. They have their reserve and are a part of the broader Salish cultural and linguistic group.

2.Salish Gifts

Location: Marine Gateway, 447-497 SW Marine Dr

In early 2013, Susan was informed about a new public art venture at Marine Gateway by Karen Mills of Public Art Management, a long-standing acquaintance. This is one of the most accessible public art pieces of her creations in the last few decades, located in a mixed-use development near the Fraser River and adjacent to the Marine Drive station.

Conceived as “a work created by and in honor of the Musqueam people,” these four pieces serve as symbols honoring the ancient Coast Salish presence in the area. They stand at approximately 3 feet in height and are made of concrete and bronze.

People use them as tables, enjoying coffee and conversations. When I visited, I saw children even climbing on top of them. It was amusing to see how the art seamlessly blended into the city, and people unconsciously used it, creating a delightful scene.

3.Moon Journey

3. Year of creation: 2009 Location: Vancouver Convention Centre, 1055 Canada Pl

This piece depicts four q”ənəs (whales) swimming around the full moon, with their dorsal fins shaped like raven heads and beaks. The number four holds significant importance for Indigenous peoples, symbolizing the four cardinal directions, the four seasons, and the four elements – earth, wind, fire, and water.

This artwork represents the Vancouver Convention Centre as a gathering place, drawing people from all directions of the earth. To appreciate the complete view of the flowing curves and beautiful colored stones, it is recommended to view it from the top floor of the building. The black stones of the tails and fins stand out, as do the white stones of the moon and the Salish-style wedges in each tail. Between the tails and fins, there are the sea and the air depicted in mottled gray stones.

Through this artwork, Susan introduced the Coast Salish culture and beliefs, showcasing important symbols for the Salish artists such as orcas and ravens.

4.Memory

Location: Various, Vancouver

The manhole covers designed by Susan and her daughter Kelly in 2004 are among her signature works. They can be found on hundreds of streets, from the heart of the business district to the leafy residential neighborhoods of Vancouver. On the day I discovered them, I stumbled upon one corner of the famous tourist spot Gastown.

Susan and Kelly explained their inspiration as follows:

“When we thought of our earliest memories relating to nature, two things that immediately came to mind were the metamorphosis or the life cycle of the frog and the butterfly.

The stormwater drain imagery depicts the metamorphosis of a frog. It shows eggs in the center, spinning out into tadpoles and then turning into frogs.

Using water, the essence of life, these designs are intended to give the feel of ‘bursts of complete life,’ using the entire surface of the manhole covers to show that all life stems from water. Through our Coast Salish First Nations’ teachings, the circular format of these designs also represents the ‘circle of life’ and the fact that all life, in one way or another, is somehow connected.

This striking arrangement of four eggs, four tadpoles, and four frogs, defined by Salish crescents, wedges, and U-forms, spreads two important themes in Salish culture – the significance of fours and the symbolism of frogs, with their reminder of the imperative of environmental stewardship.”

Susan stated, “We hope that these manhole covers provide moments of joy to all people when they come upon them.” This connection between art and infrastructure began when Councilor Jim Green suggested organizing a competition, “Art Underfoot,” in the spring of 2004, inviting artists to submit cover designs.

Over 600 professional and amateur artists and designers submitted ideas. The winners were chosen by a panel of experts including Daina Augaitis, Douglas Coupland, Sonny Assu, and Jim Fulton. Susan and Kelly’s frog design was selected for the stormwater drain covers!

The moment of directly experiencing art on-site

You can easily obtain photos and information about artworks online. However, I believe that directly experiencing art on-site is worth tens of times more. The moment of encountering beautiful art is also a moment when I feel glad to have challenged life in Vancouver.

Of course, the encounter with Joseph, which provided the opportunity to learn about Susan Point and explore the city for her art, was made possible only by being on-site.

When you venture out into the outside world, you are filled with opportunities to obtain invaluable treasures of life, such as encounters with people and exposure to cultures and arts that can only be experienced on-site, not just the chance to learn English.

Here are the meanings of each symbol used in Northwest Coast art

RAVEN – Bringer of light to the world, considered the most important cultural hero in First Nations mythology, known for its trickster nature and its role in creation.

THUNDERBIRD – Noble and all-powerful ruler of the sky and the supernatural realm, known for bringing thunder and lightning.

EAGLE – Represents great strength, fame, leadership, and future potential, known for its intelligence and respected leadership.

EAGLE FEATHER – Symbolizes welcome, friendship, and peace, often used in Indigenous rituals to convey truth and honesty.

SUN – Symbolizes development, growth, energy, and vitality, believed to be the provider of energy and life to the Earth and its inhabitants.

MOON – Symbolizes guardianship, tranquility, and calmness, believed to watch over all things and guide them towards happiness.

KILLER WHALE – Symbolizes longevity, intuition, harmony, and guardianship, known for its role as the protector of the sea and a good omen.

SALMON – Symbolizes trust, prosperity, success, and life-giving, often depicted in pairs as a symbol of good luck.

HUMMINGBIRD – Represents love, beauty, intelligence, and luck, considered a messenger of happiness and healing in times of sorrow.

BEAR – Symbolizes strength, thoughtfulness, and wisdom, often regarded as a leader and a symbol of physical and spiritual strength.

BEAVER – Represents creativity, resourcefulness, determination, and activity, known as the animal carpenter for its imaginative and diligent nature.

FROG – Symbolizes communication, stability, innocence, and new life, believed to bridge the gap between land and water creatures and represent spring and change.

SISIUTL – Represents the supernatural guardian, warrior, and healer, with the ability to shape-shift and possess strong healing powers.

BUTTERFLY – Symbolizes change, joy, and color, known as a partner of the hero Raven and believed to bring luck.

DRAGONFLY – Symbolizes transformation and change, considered a representation of freedom and activity.

WOLF – Represents intelligence, leadership, loyalty, and family love, known as pioneers and independent thinkers with strong family bonds.

DOGFISH – Symbolizes perseverance, endurance, strength, and natural leadership.

HALIBUT – Represents the protector of life, strength, and stability.

HERON – Symbolizes patience, elegance, and generosity.
