バンクーバーの木々は赤や黄色に染まり、すっかり秋模様。バンクーバーの夏は最高と誰もが口にしますが、秋も本当に美しい季節です。
そんな中でもやはり夏が恋しい気持ちは消えず、、、久々に夏の思い出を振り返りたくなって今この記事を書いています。
忙しくあっという間に過ぎた短い夏の思い出の一つは「スティーブストン（Steveston）」という小さな港町です。

スティーブストンの歴史と特徴
スティーブストンは、ブリティッシュコロンビア州のリッチモンド市に位置する小さな漁村で、歴史的に漁業の中心地として知られています。
1. 漁業の興隆
スティーブストンは19世紀末から20世紀初頭にかけて、サケの漁業が発展しました。特に、サケの缶詰工場が多く建設され、この地域はサケの加工と出荷の中心地として栄えました。多くの移民労働者がサケ漁業に従事し、多くのアジア系移民もこの地域に住んでいました。
2.カナダ太平洋鉄道
スティーブストンはカナダ太平洋鉄道の終着点としても知られており、カナダ太平洋鉄道が完成すると、スティーブストンの経済に大きな影響を与えました。この鉄道のおかげで、漁獲物が他の地域や国へも運ばれるようになり、市場が拡大しました。
3.第二次世界大戦
第二次世界大戦中、スティーブストンはカナダの西海岸における防衛の拠点として重要な役割を果たしました。日系カナダ人に対する差別的政策により、多くの日系カナダ人が強制収容所に収容されましたが、戦後、スティーブストンに戻り、彼らのコミュニティが再建されました。
4.現代のスティーブストン
現代のスティーブストンは、漁業と歴史的な遺産を観光資源として活用しています。スティーブストン港や漁業博物館など、歴史的なスポットが観光客に人気です。また、レストランやショップも点在し、地元の漁業製品や海産物を楽しむことができます。
スティーブストンは、カナダの漁業史や多様な文化の要素が交わる場所として、その歴史的な重要性を保っています。
人生で初めてのウニを食すジョセフ
私が一番印象に残っている思い出は、魚介類を販売しているこちらのエリアで食べた巨大なウニです。
実は見た目は大きいですが中身は日本で食べるウニと同じ大きさ。カナダ生まれカナダ育ちのジョセフは今までウニを食べる機会がなく、今回が初めてでした。
その場で自分でナイフでウニを開けて食すスタイル。しかし日本でウニを食べてきた私も、捌き方が分からず困っていました。
ウニの捌き方を教えてくれたとBaとAnnaの出会い
そこで私たちを助けてくれたのがこちらのBaです。彼は奥様のAnnaとこのウニを食べるためにシアトルから毎年一度だけスティーブストンに訪れるそうです。そのためウニを捌くのに非常に慣れており、ジョセフに丁寧に教えてくれました。
その場にいる人たちが沢山集まりはじめ、まるで「Baのウニの捌き方教室」が開催されているかのようでした。笑

無事ウニを食べ終えた私たちはスティーブストンの街を散歩しながら「すごく素敵なご夫婦だったね。また会いたい。」と彼らについてずっと話していました。
その後、なんと幸運なことに偶然たまたま私が入ったお店で彼らに再会！
私たちは念願の再会にとても嬉しくなり、電話番号を交換し、記念撮影をしました。
２人がでアメリカ・シアトルで運営する学校「Banna Montessori」
再会時に、お互いに改めて詳しく自己紹介をしました。そして彼らがシアトルで学校の運営を始めたばかりであることがわかりました。
学校の名前は「Banna Montessori」

二人の名前BaとAnnaを掛け合わせた「Banna」
そして「Montessori」とは、教育法として知られるモンテッソーリ教育法（Montessori Education）に関連する言葉です。
この教育法は、イタリアの医師で教育者であるマリア・モンテッソーリ（Maria Montessori）によって開発されました。
モンテッソーリ教育法は、個々の子供の発達段階やニーズに合わせた教育方法を提供し、子供たちが自己発見し、自己成長することを重視します。この教育法は、自己指導、集中力、独立性、社会的スキルの発展を支援するために、特に幼少期から小学校の初期段階にかけて使用されます。
これらの写真は、Annaが後日メールで送ってくださったBanna Montessoriでモンテッソーリ教材を使って取り組む子供達の写真です。
モンテッソーリの教室では、実生活と礼儀作法にも重点が置かれており、彼らは自己責任を持ち、他人や環境を尊重することを学ぶことができるそうです。
モンテッソーリ教育法の５つの具体例
1.自己選択の本棚
モンテッソーリの教室では、子供たちが自分で興味を持つ本を選ぶことができる本棚があります。これは、子供たちが自己選択と独立を奨励し、読書習慣を育む良い例です。
2.数学的なビーズ
数学の教材として、ビーズを使った計算道具があります。これらのビーズを操作することで、抽象的な数学の概念を視覚的かつ触覚的に理解する手助けがされます。
3.自己評価のポートフォリオ
子供たちは自分の進捗を記録し、自己評価を行うポートフォリオを持つことがあります。これにより、自己認識と成長の追跡が促進されます。
4.年齢混合の学習
モンテッソーリの教室では、異なる年齢の子供たちが同じ環境で学ぶことがあります。これは、年齢に関係なく、子供たちがお互いに学び合い、協力し、共感する機会を提供します。
5.自己指導と独立性
子供たちは自分で学び、問題を解決し、自己指導をする機会が多くあります。教師は子供たちの学習プロセスをサポートし、指導するのではなく、子供たちが自分で学ぶ力を引き出します。

バンクーバーでの暮らし
日本を発った約2年前、パートナージョセフの存在もスティーブストンも、BaとAnnaのことも、モンテッソーリ教育法についても知りませんでした。カナダでの素敵な出会いや、新しい街に出かけて知識を得ることができる機会に感謝しています。

Summer Steveston and Giant Sea Urchins. Meeting a Lovely Couple from Seattle and the Montessori Education
The trees in Vancouver are turning red and yellow, and it’s definitely feeling like autumn. While everyone praises Vancouver’s summer, the fall season is also truly beautiful.
However, the longing for summer never really disappears. So, I’m writing this article now because I want to look back on summer memories after a long time.
One of the fleeting summer memories that passed by in the blink of an eye is a small harbor town called ‘Steveston’.
The history and features of Steveston
Steveston is a small fishing village located in the city of Richmond, British Columbia, and it is historically known as a hub for the fishing industry.
Prosperity of the Fishing Industry
Steveston saw the development of salmon fishing from the late 19th to the early 20th century. Many salmon canneries were built, making this area a hub for salmon processing and shipping. Numerous immigrant laborers were involved in salmon fishing, and a significant number of Asian immigrants also resided in this region.
Canadian Pacific Railway
Steveston is also known as the terminus for the Canadian Pacific Railway, which had a significant impact on the local economy upon its completion. Thanks to this railway, fish catches could be transported to other regions and countries, expanding the market.
World War II During
World War II, Steveston played an important role as a defense base on the west coast of Canada. Discriminatory policies against Japanese Canadians led to the internment of many Japanese Canadians, but after the war, they returned to Steveston, and their community was rebuilt.
Modern Steveston
Modern-day Steveston leverages its fishing industry and historical heritage as tourist resources. Historical spots such as Steveston Harbour and the Fishing Industry Museum are popular among tourists. Additionally, restaurants and shops are scattered around, offering opportunities to enjoy local seafood products.
Steveston remains historically significant as a place where elements of Canadian fishing history and diverse cultures intersect.
Joseph Tries Sea Urchin for the First Time in His Life
The most memorable experience for me was eating a huge sea urchin in this area that sells seafood.
In fact, it looked large, but the inside was the same size as the sea urchin I’ve eaten in Japan. Joseph, born and raised in Canada, had never had the opportunity to eat sea urchin before, and this was his first time.
We had to open the sea urchin ourselves with a knife and eat it on the spot.
However, even though I had eaten sea urchin in Japan, I was puzzled because I didn’t know how to handle it.
The Encounter with Ba and Anna, Who Taught Us How to Prepare Sea urchin
It was Ba who came to our rescue, teaching us how to prepare sea urchin. He and his wife Anna come to Steveston from Seattle once a year just to enjoy this sea urchin. As a result, he was very skilled at handling sea urchin and patiently taught Joseph.
A crowd began to gather, and it felt like we were attending a “Ba’s sea urchin Preparation Class.” Everyone was laughing and having a good time.

After enjoying the sea urchin, we strolled through the streets of Steveston, continuously talking about how wonderful Ba and Anna were and how we’d love to meet them again.
As luck would have it, we coincidentally bumped into them at a shop I entered. We were overjoyed by this long-awaited reunion, exchanged phone numbers, and took some commemorative photos.
They both operate a school in the United States, in Seattle, called ‘Banna Montessori.’
During this reunion, we had a more detailed introduction to each other, and we found out that they had recently started operating a school in Seattle.
The school’s name is ‘Banna Montessori,’ which combines the names Ba and Anna.

‘Montessori’ is a word related to the Montessori Education method, known as the Montessori Education system, developed by Maria Montessori, an Italian physician and educator.
The Montessori Education method provides an educational approach tailored to the developmental stages and needs of each individual child. It emphasizes self-discovery and self-growth in children.
This method is particularly used during the early stages of childhood and primary school to support the development of self-direction, concentration, independence, and social skills.

In Montessori classrooms, there is also a focus on practical life and grace and courtesy, allowing them to learn to take responsibility for themselves and to respect others and the environment.
Five Specific Examples of the Montessori Education Method
Self-Selected Bookshelves
In Montessori classrooms, there are bookshelves where children can choose books that interest them. This encourages self-selection and independence, fostering good reading habits.
Mathematical Beads
As a math learning tool, there are mathematical beads. Manipulating these beads helps children understand abstract mathematical concepts visually and tactilely.
Self-Evaluation Portfolios
Children may have portfolios where they record their progress and perform self-evaluations. This promotes self-awareness and tracking of their own growth.
Mixed-Age Learning
In Montessori classrooms, children of different ages may learn in the same environment. This provides opportunities for children to learn from each other, collaborate, and empathize, regardless of age.
Self-Directed Learning and Independence
Children have numerous opportunities to learn by themselves, solve problems, and engage in self-directed activities. Teachers support and guide the learning process rather than instruct, allowing children to develop their independent learning skills.
The Montessori Education method is adopted by many schools and educational institutions worldwide and is widely recognized for its effectiveness and characteristics. This educational approach brings a fresh perspective to children’s self-development and education, earning support from many parents and educators.
If I have children in the future, I strongly want to enroll them in a school that utilizes the Montessori Education method!
Seattle and Vancouver
Although there is a border between Canada and the United States, Seattle is only a 3.5-hour drive or a 4-hour bus ride from Vancouver. I plan to visit Seattle soon to see them.
