バンクーバー美術館/Vancouver Art Gallery
私がバンクーバーで大好きな美術館といえば「バンクーバー美術館/Vancouver Art Gallery」通称VAGです。
展覧会では、カナダを代表する有名なアーティストから世界的に評価されている海外アーティストまで幅広く展示されています。
また定期的に展覧会の内容が変わるため、何度訪れても鮮度のあるアートを堪能することができます。さらに同じ展覧会を数回に分けて訪れたくなるほど、展示物の数が多いので年間パスを購入しました。

先日行った時はこちらの「PRIDE」のレインボーフラックが装飾されたVAGを見ることが出来ました。
1931年設立されたVAGは、その後1983年に、1979年まで裁判所として使用されていたこちらの重厚感のある石造りの建物に移転オープンしました。西カナダ最大規模の15,300平方メートルの面積です。
展覧会「Fashion Fictions」
そんな美しいVAGで現在開催中の「Fashion Fiction」は、世界的に有名なトップファッションデザイナーによるコレクションが並びます。（2023年10月9日に終了予定）
彼らの作品が「美学的予言」「近未来的な素材」「責任のあるビジョン」「バック・トゥ・ザ・フューチャー」「スニーカー」「パファー」「デジタルファッション」の7つのコンセプトにカテゴライズされて展示されています。
情報量の多さとひとつひとつの作品に深みがあるため、私は一度だけでは時間が足らず、三回訪れました。
一度目は一人で、二度目と三度目はパートナージョセフと訪れたました。
様々な文化的伝統、SF、最新のテクノロジー、自然界の現象や産物、持続可能性などをテーマに作られた彼らの美しいアートを目の当たりにし、強く感銘を受けました。
また川久保玲さん、渡辺淳弥さんや三宅一生さんなどの世界的に有名な日本人デザイナーの作品も多く並んでおり、同じ日本人として誇らしくなりました。
こちらがスニーカーの展示コーナーです。興味深く、見応えがありました。
何周も回ってジョセフと自分のお気に入りの作品を伝え合いながら過ごす時間はとても有意義でした。

①デザイナー高橋盾 for UNDERCOVER「Ensemble Utopie:But Beautiful III Collection,Fall/Winter 2017」
「ファッショの魔術師」と呼ばれる日本人デザイナー高橋盾のUNFERCOVER2017年秋冬のコレクションのひとつであるこちらのドレス。彼はこのコレクションで、魅惑的な複雑さをテーマに、見ている人が思わず没入してしまう世界観を表現しています。
素材：全てシルク
私もこのドレスの前で、思わず長時間足が止まりました。複雑かつ美しいデザインに見惚れて没入してしまいました。
②デザイナーRick Owen「Kingーsize Puffer Blanket」Gethesemane collection,2021
アメリカ人デザイナーRick Owenは、ゴス、グランジ、ストリートウェアの要素をアヴァンギャルドなシルエットとテーラリングで融合させたシグネチャー的美学で知られています。このコレクションは。彼がほとんどの夏を過ごしている、イタリアのベニス近郊のビーチリゾートにあるミリタリースタイルの長い桟橋で発表されました。
「パファーアイテムはシルエットが繊細ではなくて醜いものが多い」という私の先入観を覆す作品でした。
③デザイナーJulia Koerner「Arid Dress」2020
Julia Koernerは、オーストリア人のファッションデザイナー、研究者かつ教育者でもあります。彼女は高度なテクノロジーとパラメトリック・デザインの技術を駆使し、幽玄で別世界に迷い込んだかのような作品を生み出すことで知られています。
彼女は、自然界に存在する形態や現象からインスピレーションを得ることことが多いです。「人間が開発した最新の技術を使用して、自然界を表現する」というコンビネーションが、私がこの作品に魅了された理由の一つです。
「PolyJet テクノロジー」を使用
Stratasys社が特許を取得した高性能のプリンティング方式です。ゴムから硬質まで、透明から不透明まで、広範囲な材料をサポートできる唯一の技術です。PolyJetテクノロジーでの3Dプリンターは、0.1ｍｍの高い精度で14μmの層を作成し、滑らかな表面、薄壁、複雑な形状を実現することが出来ます。

①デザイナー川久保玲 for Comme des Garçons「Dress The Future of Silhouette c correction,Fall/Winter2017 」
Comme des Garçonsnのデザイナーとして、40年以上にわたってファッションカルチャーの中心である世界的にも有名な川久保玲の作品です。この作品は、人間の体型の特異性やフォルムを無視し、身体を彫刻として再構築しデザインされたドレスです。
素材：ポリエステル混紡フリースをティッシュにラミネートしたもの
着用するとこのような見え方になります。
ジョセフを含め、館内の人たちが日本人デザイナーの作品に魅了されている姿を見ると、思わず嬉しくなります。
②デザイナーStina Randestad for STINARAND「Paper Dress」2022
スェーデン人デザイナーのStinaは自身のブランドSTINARANDを2021年に設立しました。サスティナビリティがブランドコンセプトの核となっています。
彼女の服はテーラースイフトやロンドンを拠点に活躍する日本人ミュージシャンリナ・サワヤマ、ビヨンセなどの数々の世界的に有名なミュージシャンに着用されています。
このドレスは、ボタンや留め具を含め、すべてを紙で作るという彼女の興味から生まれたものです。
彼女はこのペーパー・ドレスで、美的もしくは形式的な厳密さを損なうことなく、捨てられる製品や素材を永続的に再利用しつづけ、利益に変えるシステムの実現の可能性を主張しています。
③デザイナーDemna Gvasalia for Balenciaga「Dress, Clones collection,Resort 2022」
ジョージア出身のDemna Gvasaliaは、2014年、ファッションブランド「ヴェトモン」を立ち上げ、2020年に退任後「バレンシアガ」のアーティスティック・ディレクターにしました。
このコレクションでは、テクノロジーが現実に対する私たちの認識をどのように変化させたかを取り上げられています。メディア化されつつある私たちの存在は「未編集と改変、本物と偽造、有形と概念、事実と虚構、フェイクとディープフェイク」を判断することを難しくさせています。
※ディープフェイクとは、「深層学習（deep learning）」と「偽物（fake）」を組み合わせた混成語。2つ以上の写真や動画の一部を入れ替える技術です。

①デザイナーYing Gao「Purple Skin」2020
カナダのモントリオールをベースに活躍しているファッションデザイナーかつ教育者です。
彼女は最新のハイブリット技術を導入して作られる革新的で型破りな素材を使用することで知られています。そのため、彼女の作品は物理的な世界とバーチャルな世界の境界を曖昧にするユニークな特徴があります。
素材：シリコン、スーパーソフトオーガンジー、PVDF（ポリフッ化ビニリデン）
②デザイナーWilliam Shen for Christopher Raxxy「Ensemble from Vol.3 The Vast Land,collection Fall/Winter 2023」
学際的なデザイナーウィリアムシェンは、中国のファッションブランド「Christopher Raxxy」のクリエイティブディレクターです。このブランドは上海とミラノで創業されました。彼のデザインの魅力は、中国の伝統的な文化から影響された芸術性、強い論理的思考とテクニックのバランスです。彼のシンボルである、数学的、幾何学的な要素が詰まっているのもこの作品の魅力です。
素材: 合成繊維、ダウン
私とジョセフは複雑なパターンながらも美しいシェイプに仕上がっていることに感激しました。

また多文化主義のバンクーバーは、世界各国から多種多様で美しいアートが集まる都市です。
バンクーバーに来て、美しい芸術やアートに触れる瞬間も海外生活に挑戦してみてよかったと思える瞬間です。世界中で一点しかない芸術を見る機会はその瞬間しかないからです。

Visited the exhibition ‘Fashion Fictions’ at the Vancouver Art Gallery three times
Vancouver Art Gallery (VAG)
When it comes to my favorite art museum in Vancouver, it’s the Vancouver Art Gallery, commonly referred to as VAG. The exhibitions showcase a wide range of artists, from well-known Canadian artists to internationally acclaimed foreign artists.
Additionally, since the exhibition content changes regularly, you can enjoy fresh art no matter how many times you visit. Furthermore, with the extensive number of exhibits that make you want to visit the same exhibition multiple times, I purchased an annual pass.

During my recent visit, I was able to see the VAG adorned with the “PRIDE” rainbow flag.
Established in 1931, the VAG relocated to this impressive stone building with a sense of grandeur, which had been used as a courthouse until 1979, in 1983. It occupies a vast area of 15,300 square meters, making it the largest gallery in Western Canada.
Exhibition: “Fashion Fictions”
Currently held at the splendid VAG is the “Fashion Fictions” exhibition, showcasing collections by world-renowned top fashion designers. (Scheduled to conclude on October 9, 2023)
Their works are categorized into seven concepts: “Aesthetic Prophecies,” “Near-Future Materials,” “Responsible Vision,” “Back to the Future,” “Sneakers,” “Puffers,” and “Digital Fashion.”
Due to the richness of information and the depth of each individual piece, I visited three times, as a single visit wasn’t enough.
My first visit was alone, while the second and third visits were with my partner Joseph.
Witnessing their beautiful art, which is created with themes ranging from various cultural traditions, science fiction, cutting-edge technology, natural phenomena and products, to sustainability, left a strong impression on me.
Furthermore, the works of globally renowned Japanese designers like Rei Kawakubo, Junya Watanabe, and Issey Miyake were also prominently displayed, making me proud as a fellow Japanese.
Here’s the sneaker exhibition corner. It was intriguing and quite impressive. Spending time walking around, discussing our favorite pieces with Joseph, was a highly meaningful experience.
My Top 3 Favorites
1.Designer Jun Takahashi for UNDERCOVER “Ensemble Utopie: But Beautiful III Collection, Fall/Winter 2017”
This dress is part of the 2017 Fall/Winter collection by Japanese designer Jun Takahashi, often referred to as the “sorcerer of fashion.” In this collection, he expresses a captivating complexity that immerses the viewer in a world of enchantment.
Material: All silk
I also found myself stopping in front of this dress for an extended period, captivated by its intricate and beautiful design.
2.Designer Rick Owens “King-size Puffer Blanket” from the Gethsemane collection, 2021
American designer Rick Owens is known for his signature aesthetic that blends elements of goth, grunge, and streetwear with avant-garde silhouettes and tailoring. This collection was presented on a long military-style pier in a beach resort near Venice, Italy, where he spends much of his summers.
The piece challenged my preconception that puffer items often lack delicate and beautiful silhouettes.
3.Designer Julia Koerner “Arid Dress,” 2020
Julia Koerner is an Austrian fashion designer, researcher, and educator.
She is renowned for her use of advanced technology and parametric design to create ethereal and otherworldly pieces. Often drawing inspiration from forms and phenomena found in the natural world, she combines the latest human-developed technologies to represent nature.
Created using “PolyJet Technology,” a high-performance printing method patented by Stratasys.
PolyJet 3D printers achieve high accuracy with 0.1mm precision and layers as thin as 14μm. They can create smooth surfaces, thin walls, and intricate shapes across a wide range of materials.

1.Designer Rei Kawakubo for Comme des Garçons “Dress The Future of Silhouette c correction, Fall/Winter 2017”
This piece by Rei Kawakubo, a globally renowned designer at the helm of Comme des Garçons for over 40 years, challenges conventional body shapes and forms.
The dress is designed by disregarding the uniqueness of human body types and reconstructing the body as a sculpture.
Material: Polyester-blend fleece laminated onto tissue
When wearing it, it appears as follows. Seeing people, including Joseph, captivated by the works of Japanese designers within the gallery makes me feel delighted.
2.Designer Stina Randestad for STINARAND “Paper Dress,” 2022
Swedish designer Stina established her brand STINARAND in 2021, with sustainability at the core of her brand concept.
Her clothing has been worn by world-renowned musicians like Japanese musician Rina Sawayama and Beyoncé, based in London. This dress was born out of her interest in creating everything, including buttons and fasteners, from paper.
With this paper dress, she advocates for the possibility of establishing a system where disposable products and materials are perpetually reused and transformed into profit, without compromising aesthetic or formal rigor.
3.Designer Demna Gvasalia for Balenciaga “Dress, Clones collection, Resort 2022”
Hailing from Georgia, Demna Gvasalia founded the fashion brand Vetements in 2014 and later became the Artistic Director of Balenciaga in 2020.
This collection delves into how technology has altered our perception of reality. Our increasingly mediated existence blurs distinctions between “unedited and altered, authentic and counterfeit, tangible and conceptual, fact and fiction, fake and deep fake.” (Note: Deepfake is a term formed by combining “deep learning” and “fake,” referring to the technique of altering content within photos and videos using machine learning.

1.Designer Ying Gao “Purple Skin,” 2020
Ying Gao is a fashion designer and educator based in Montreal, Canada.
She’s known for using innovative and unconventional materials created using the latest hybrid technology. As a result, her works possess unique features that blur the boundaries between the physical and virtual worlds.
Materials: Silicone, super-soft organza, PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride).
Designer William Shen for Christopher Raxxy “Ensemble from Vol.3 The Vast Land, collection Fall/Winter 2023”
William Shen, an interdisciplinary designer, is the Creative Director of the Chinese fashion brand “Christopher Raxxy.”
Founded in Shanghai and Milan, this brand’s allure lies in a balance of artistic influences from traditional Chinese culture, strong logical thinking, and techniques. The attractiveness of this piece also stems from the mathematical and geometric elements, which are his symbols. Materials: Synthetic fibers, down.
Both Joseph and I were amazed by the intricate yet beautifully shaped patterns.
Moments of Encountering Unique Art in Vancouver
Furthermore, multicultural Vancouver is a city that gathers diverse and beautiful art from around the world. Coming to Vancouver and experiencing beautiful art and artworks is a moment that makes challenging overseas living worthwhile.
The opportunity to see art that is one-of-a-kind in the world exists only in that moment.
For those who are even slightly interested in studying abroad or working holidays but find it difficult to take action, I recommend starting with a free consultation with an agency.
On the other side of that decision lie language learning, meeting people, work opportunities, and most importantly, the chance to directly experience fields of interest in a foreign land, which becomes a treasure in life.
