ハーレーとの出会いと初めてカナダで髪を切った日/Encounter with Harley and the day I got my hair cut for the first time in Canada

バンクーバーに来て約1年半が経ち、顎上までしかなかった髪の毛がついに胸のラインまでに伸びました。

バンクーバーには日本人がやってる良い美容院がいくつかあると同僚や友達から聞きます。しかし同じ日本人なら、私が最も信頼を寄せている東京にある美容院で切りたいと思いなんとなく気が乗りませんでした。せっかくバンクーバーにいるので新しい体験がしたいという気持ちもありました。11月に一時帰国する予定なのでそれまでこれを機に久々に髪を伸ばそうと考えていました。

しかし、ついにバンクーバーで髪を切りたくなる機会が訪れました。それはハーレーとの出会いです。ハーレーは2月にアルベルタからバンクーバーに引っ越してきました。そして今ヘアスタイリストになるために美容師学校に通っています。
そんなハーレーから髪を切りたいとオファーをいただいたので長く伸ばしていた髪を切ることに。

一期一会 in バンクーバー⑨

彼女と出会ったのは元職場のフローリストです。ボスが忙しくなるバレンタインデーに向けて求人をかけていたところ、彼女の採用が決まりました。彼女の第一印象は笑顔がとても優しくて、話しやすい雰囲気を持っていました。私は初めて会う人に英語で話しかける時、いつも少し緊張します。しかし彼女の雰囲気はそれをやわらげてくれる力があります。

実は彼女は18歳という若さなのですが、既に人生経験が豊富だからか、話していてもその年齢を全く感じさせません。まるで同い年か年上の人と話しているように感じるほど落ち着きがあります。

彼女と出会った頃のバレンタインデー時期のディスプレイです。懐かしいです。

ハーレーとの思い出

①ハーレーがくれたコーラとお菓子

私が前の職場を辞める数日前に彼女とフェイモントホテルバンクーバーへお花のメンテナンスに行きました。エントランスでドライバーさんが来るのを待っていた時に、突然彼女が買ってきてくれたコーラとお菓子。「あやがもうすぐ去るからプレゼントだよ」と言ってくれた彼女の優しい笑顔を今でも鮮明に覚えています。

②コンバース好きのハーレー
彼女はコンバースが好きで９つのコンバースを持っています。その日によって違ったコンバースをよく私に見せてくれました。私のお気に入りはこちらのスヌーピーのコンバースです。

③VVRとして出店したヴィンテージ販売イベント「ビザーバザー」
私はパートナーとヴィンテージ品のリセールビジネス「VVR」を営んでいます。今年の4月にVVRとして出店したカリーナ主催のイベント「ビザーバザー」にハーレーが来てくれたのもとても嬉しかったです。しかも何点かお洋服も買ってくれて感無量でした。

ハーレーが購入してくれたお洋服は上の左の写真で私が持っているセーターとこちらの舞妓Tシャツとジャケット。ハーレーにとても良く似合っていました。私も特におすすめの商品だったので彼女に気に入ってもらえて光栄でした。

そして約１０日前についにハーレーの自宅で髪を切ってもらいました。新しいヘアスタイルは周りからも大変好評です。この日彼女はビールまで用意してくれて、久々にゆっくり話もできて有意義な時間でした。彼女がバンクーバーの人気のヘアスタイリストになる日は近いと確信しています。

彼女との出会いもバンクーバーに来てよかったと強く感じることができる一期一会です。

Encounter with Harley and the day I got my hair cut for the first time in Canada

It has been about a year and a half since I came to Vancouver, and my hair, which was only chin-length, has finally grown down to my chest. I heard from colleagues and friends that there are good hair salons run by Japanese people in Vancouver. However, as a fellow Japanese, I didn’t feel like going to a salon here when I have the one I trust the most in Tokyo. I also wanted to have a new experience while I’m in Vancouver. I had plans to return to Japan temporarily in November, so I thought I would let my hair grow long until then.

However, the opportunity to get my hair cut in Vancouver finally came. It was through my encounter with Harley. Harley moved to Vancouver from Alberta in February. She is currently attending beauty school to become a hairstylist.

Harley offered to cut my hair, so I decided to cut off the long hair I had been growing. This photo is from when she showed me her favorite rollerblades at her home.

Encounter with Harley – Part 9 in Vancouver

I met her at my former workplace, a florist shop. When my boss was getting busy for Valentine’s Day, we were hiring, and she was chosen. My first impression of her was that she had a very kind smile and a friendly atmosphere that made it easy to talk to her. I always feel a little nervous when speaking English to someone I meet for the first time. But her presence had a calming effect on me.

Actually, she is only 18 years old, but she already has a wealth of life experiences that make her seem much older than her age. She has a calmness that makes me feel like I’m talking to someone my own age or older.

This is the display we had during Valentine’s Day when I first met her. It brings back memories.

Coke and Snacks from Harley

A few days before I left my previous job, she and I went to the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver for flower maintenance. While we were waiting at the entrance for the driver to arrive, she suddenly bought me a Coke and snacks. She said, “It’s a present because Aya is leaving soon,” with a gentle smile that I still remember vividly.

Harley’s Love for Converse

She loves Converse and owns nine pairs of them. She would often show me different pairs of Converse depending on the day. My favorite is this Snoopy Converse.

VVR’s Participation in the Vintage Sales Event “Bizarre Bazaar”

I run a vintage resale business called VVR with my partner. I was very happy when Harley came to the Bizarre Bazaar event organized by Kaarina, where VVR participated in April. Moreover, she bought several pieces of clothing, which made me ecstatic.

The clothes she purchased for me were the sweater in the left photo and this maiko T-shirt and jacket. They looked great on Harley, and I was honored that she liked them since they were my recommended products.

The day I got my hair cut for the first time in Vancouver

About 10 days ago, I finally had my hair cut by Harley at my home. The new hairstyle has received a lot of positive feedback from everyone around me. On that day, she even prepared beer for me, and it was a meaningful time where we could relax and have a good conversation. I am confident that the day she becomes a popular hairstylist in Vancouver is not far away.

Meeting her is also a once-in-a-lifetime experience that makes me strongly feel that coming to Vancouver was a good decision. Wonderful encounters await you when you gather the courage to challenge new things.
